The Alvernian is Alvernia University’s monthly student newspaper. The newspaper is assembled by students in Journalism Workshop and Newspaper Production. The Alvernian covers campus and community events, as well as stories happening in the greater Berks community. In addition, contributors have been able to submit their stories to BCTV.org where they can be shared with a larger community audience.

Students who take the Alvernian courses must write clean, style-compliant copy, interview persons, take effective pictures, write punchy headlines and captions, and be involved in the peer editing process. Students who serve as editors need to provide constructive feedback to student writers, coordinate with the managing editor (as applicable), and assemble the issue while being responsible for individual content generation. The Alvernian requires students to put the training they have accumulated in courses like Writing for the Media, News and Feature Writing, or the other multimedia production courses in our major to work in creating a tangible content product.

Students have used the work samples in the Alvernian to land internships and entry-level positions, and the experience they have gained in interviewing and working on deadline translate across several roles.
