Across Pennsylvania, students drawn to science, investigation, and justice are finding their future in forensic science. At Alvernia University, the Bachelor of Science in Forensic Science provides the technical training, ethical framework, and practical experience to make an impact in this exciting field from day one.

As a Forensic Science major at Alvernia, you will:

1. Develop a Strong Scientific Foundation

The program begins by establishing a solid foundation in biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics, core disciplines that form the backbone of forensic investigation. You will develop the analytical thinking and problem-solving skills essential for interpreting physical and biological evidence.

2. Learn by Doing

At the O’Pake Science Center, you’ll gain hands-on training with industry-standard forensic instruments, developing the skills to analyze diverse types of evidence:

  • Gas Chromatography (GC) – Identifies substances like drugs, toxins, and accelerants commonly found in arson investigations.
  • Mass Spectrometry (MS) – Determines the chemical makeup of samples, including drugs and explosives.
  • High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) – Analyzes biological fluids such as blood or urine for drugs and poisons.
  • Infrared and UV/Visible Spectrometry – Detects chemical compounds to analyze fibers, paints, and unknown substances.
  • Atomic Absorption and Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy – Measures trace metals and elements in evidence, like gunshot residue, metals, or environmental contaminants.

Through integrated labs, simulations, and fieldwork, students learn to handle evidence, follow chain-of-custody procedures, and document findings accurately and reliably.

3. Apply Ethics and Professionalism in Forensic Practice

Rooted in Alvernia’s Franciscan values, the curriculum covers law, ethics, and forensic science to foster a strong moral compass and commitment to justice in your forensic career. It examines professional ethics, social responsibilities, and legal theories like natural law and legal positivism.

Philosophical discussions on morality and responsibility develop the skills to approach complex ethical challenges with clarity and integrity.

4. Prepare for a Rewarding Career

Forensic science majors are prepared for impactful careers in a wide range of professional environments, including:

  • Federal and state crime labs
  • Drug enforcement agencies
  • Toxicology and forensic pathology labs
