Leadership Insights
Short, actionable leadership insights grounded in research and practice.
This summer, Alvernia University hosted the Jay Sidhu Never Ever, Ever Give Up Global Youth Leadership Boot Camp, an immersive two-week experience that brought together exceptional high school students from around the world. Through executive presentations, faculty-led workshops, experiential learning, and visits to organizations including the New York Stock Exchange, students explored leadership, entrepreneurship, resilience, and innovation while building lasting global relationships. It was a privilege to serve as the Program Co-Director and witness firsthand the leadership lessons that consistently emerged from an extraordinary group of business and community leaders.
Leadership Insight
One lesson consistently emerged from this year’s Jay Sidhu Never Ever, Ever Give Up Global Youth Leadership Boot Camp: high performers are remarkably consistent. They commit to becoming experts in something that matters, invest in genuine relationships, persevere through challenges, and show up every day with the same work ethic and reliability. Leadership is not built through occasional brilliance. It is earned through behaviors that others can count on, day after day.
Power is the capacity to influence outcomes. It does not come from title alone; it can come from position, expertise, relationships, credibility, or access to valued resources. Without it, no one can lead, protect what matters, advance good ideas, or create meaningful change. Power is neutral; the real questions are how it is earned, why it is used, and who benefits. As Alvernia graduates, we are called to be ethical leaders with moral courage, using power not for ego or control, but to do good, do well, and serve others. Good people should not avoid power; they should pursue it responsibly and use it to make a positive difference.
Successful professionals thrive because they understand the value they are required to add. They read the situation, understand their role and context, and deliver what is needed. We should all self-identify as high performers: people who add the right value, at the right level, given their role at the time. When we need to lead, we lead. When we need to follow, we follow. When we need to manage, we manage. Throughout any given day, we may be called to do all three. Thinking and operating as a high performer keeps us focused not on a single role, but on assuming the role and adding the value each moment requires. This shift is a game changer.
Dr. Travis Berger’s Signature Keynote
Leadership has a language problem.
Organizations use the same words — leadership, accountability, alignment, ownership, performance — but often mean very different things. The result is inconsistent expectations, misaligned development efforts, and leadership practices that do not always translate into sustained performance.
Leadership’s common language challenges leaders to rethink how leadership is understood, discussed, developed, and practiced across an organization.
Grounded in leadership research and shaped by real-world application, the keynote provides a practical way to establish shared language, strengthen expectations, and connect leadership development to how people actually lead, follow, manage, and perform.
Participants leave with a more coherent way to think about leadership and a stronger foundation for creating direction, alignment, accountability, and performance across their organizations.
