Veterans Center headlines benefits and resources available on campus

Colleges of Distinction awards Alvernia University with its Military Support Badge for 2020-21. Alvernia receives this award for continually providing a high level of support for its active military duty and veteran students.

“Alvernia University is a student-centric institution that prides itself on offering academic and extracurricular support services,” said Senior Associate Director of Admissions and Coordinator of the Veterans Center Bret Krotee. “We are very fortunate for the opportunity to engage our military students that have served our country so selflessly. This specific population adds enormous value to our campus community through their unmatched and unique experiences.”

Alvernia is one of the few institutions across the country that has a physical Veterans Center. This hub offers the resources, support, and advocacy necessary to succeed in higher education. The Veterans Success Team, comprised of a Veterans Center Coordinator and three student veterans, encourages participation in military organizations, develops outreach programs to enlighten the campus community about veteran culture and history and raises awareness about issues surrounding veterans and their families.

Typically, the Veterans Success Team organizes an on-campus Veterans Day Celebration, various fundraisers, community events and an annual Senior Reception & Cording Ceremony. Many of these activities have been successfully transitioned to a virtual space during the global COVID-19 pandemic.

“Institutions with the Military Support recognition are aware of the unique challenges military students face on college campuses,” said Tyson Schritter, Chief Operating Officer at Colleges of Distinction. “Alvernia University is proud to support and cultivate the skills that military students bring to the classroom, all while helping them achieve their personal and professional goals.”

Alvernia has also been recognized with the Military Friendly ® status for eight consecutive years for meeting university benchmarks in areas such as student retention, graduation and job placement and being in good standing with federal programs such as the Post-9/11 GI Bill and Armed Forces Tuition Assistance Funding.

Alvernia University has received two other COD badges for 2020-21, earning recognition for career development and equity and inclusion. Alvernia also received three COD Field of Study badges for its business, education and nursing programs.
