Student group named Chapter of the Year

Lambda Sigma Society, a national honor society for second-year college students, names the Alvernia student chapter as 2018 Chapter of the Year. The award for outstanding chapter is presented to students during the society’s national leadership conference in the fall, which takes place in Pittsburgh this year.

In addition to Chapter of the Year, Alvernia’s student group has been unanimously presented with the highest honor for outstanding work during the past academic year. The Honor Chapter award is given for service to the community as well as the overall functioning of the chapter. Run by 36 sophomore students, Alvernia’s chapter is recognized for “remarkable leadership, fellowship, and service in addition to being academically superior.”

First-year students at Alvernia who have placed in at least the top 35 percent of the class academically and who have shown evidence of leadership during their first year are selected to participate in the chapter. Students benefit from opportunities for personal growth, leadership experience, a sense of involvement on campus and the friendship of other student leaders and scholars.

Past recipients of the Chapter of the Year award include Auburn, Mississippi State University, University of Pittsburgh and Westminster College. Lambda Sigma Society is dedicated to fostering leadership, scholarship, fellowship and service among its members as they promote the interests of colleges and universities they represent
