Adult Education Student: Jennifer Hack - Criminal Justice Major

Jennifer Hack '18 has always been interested in the criminal justice field, and her calling to assist youth in the juvenile probation system led to an experiential learning experience at the Berks County Probation Office. Through the practicum during her final semester, she had an inside look at evidence-based practices that guide treatment, identify triggers, prevent future occurrences and diffuses situations among troubled youth.

“I want to be someone who helps guide troubled youth, getting them the help and support they need. I feel that it is important for young adults to know that even if they make mistakes, there are people out there who are willing to help them,” said Hack, a criminal justice graduate.“The practicum was a great way to open my eyes and realize what I want to do in the future.”

Raised in the City of Reading by a single mother, Hack was a married mother of three children, juggling part-time work, family and school. “My mother’s work ethic was a big influence on me. She taught me that you have to work hard to get the things you want in life. I’ve learned to grow from my mistakes and be humbled by my success.”

Hack previously graduated from Reading Area Community College with an associate degree in criminal justice in 2003 and worked as a part-time supervisor for Earthrise, a nonprofit business affiliated with the Berks County Juvenile Probation Office. This position guided her decision to return to Alvernia for her bachelor’s degree in criminal justice administration.

Hack currently works for Berks County Children and Youth Services as a caseworker in the Sexual Abuse unit. She works closely with the District Attorney's office as well as with local law enforcement. “It’s a great department to be in when you have a criminal justice degree,” admits Hack.
