Longtime civic leader advocates Reading CollegeTowne strategy
John Weidenhammer, president and founder of Weidenhammer Systems Corporation, joins Alvernia University’s board of trustees.
Weidenhammer, the chairman of the Berks Alliance and Reading native, has championed downtown redevelopment through his involvement with various community organizations.
“John has shown his leadership in creating a more vibrant downtown not only through his involvement with the Berks Alliance but also an investment in property along Penn Street, clearly a statement about his faith in the future of downtown Reading,” said Alvernia University board of trustees Chairman Michael Fromm. “The Alvernia community and Reading CollegeTowne strategy will greatly benefit from John’s experience and expertise.”
Weidenhammer, a prominent civic leader for more than 40 years, molded Weidenhammer Systems into one of the 500 largest informational and technology companies in America and is recognized by its industry for sales achievement and innovation.
He currently serves on the boards of the Reading Hospital, the Greater Reading Chamber Alliance, the Berks Business Education Coalition, the Greater Reading Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Berks Latino Workforce Development Corporation and Penn State Berks Campus Advisory Board.
Weidenhammer is a past recipient of Alvernia's Franciscan Award, given annually to a person who selflessly gives their time, talents and resources for the betterment of others and exceptional service to Alvernia. He also is the recipient of the Gene Shirk Community Service award, the Philadelphia Business Journal Technology Disrupter Award, the Lehigh Valley Business Journal's Corporate Executive of the Year and the Centro Hispano Community Service Award.
Alvernia recently announced plans for expansion into downtown Reading after entering into a letter of intent agreement for the location at 401 Penn Street. More information on Reading CollegeTowne is available at Alvernia.edu.
