The Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice Administration at Alvernia University opens doors to meaningful careers across the criminal justice field. Whether you opt for the online program or the traditional on-campus experience, both paths emphasize a strong ethical foundation and practical skills to serve communities across Pennsylvania and beyond.

About Criminal Justice at Alvernia

The curriculum covers key areas including criminology, judicial procedures, juvenile justice, ethics, corrections, and issues related to gender, race, and crime, all taught by faculty with extensive professional experience.

The degree is grounded in an ethics-based approach inspired by Alvernia’s Franciscan values. Students are encouraged to view criminal justice through not only a legal and procedural perspective but also with a strong commitment to social responsibility and moral integrity. Courses focus on ethical decision-making, restorative justice, and promoting fairness and equity within the criminal justice system.

Course Delivery

The online program is designed for working professionals or nontraditional students. It offers a fully online format, with an optional hybrid model that includes evening Zoom sessions or occasional on-campus meetings. Courses run in 7-week accelerated terms, allowing for flexible scheduling and completion in 2 to 4 years.

The on-campus program follows a traditional semester schedule, with an emphasis on face-to-face learning. It requires 123 credits and includes general education and liberal arts core courses. While offering more structure and in-person engagement, it may be less flexible in terms of course scheduling and pace.

Experiential Learning

The online program includes a required practicum or internship, providing students with the opportunity to apply their knowledge in various criminal justice environments, including local, state, or federal law enforcement agencies, correctional institutions, probation and parole offices, private security firms, or community-based service organizations. Students are supported in identifying placement opportunities in their local areas.

The on-campus program offers a more structured experiential component through CJ 408: Agency Practicum, a senior-year capstone course that requires 252 hours of supervised fieldwork. This practicum immerses students in a professional criminal justice setting, fostering skills in communication, ethical decision-making, and agency operations.

In addition to the practicum, on-campus students have access to a broader range of experiential opportunities, including student organizations like the Criminal Justice Association, internships during the academic year or summer, faculty-led research projects, and community-based service initiatives.

Which One Is Right for You?

If you’re balancing work, family, or other commitments, the online program offers flexible, self-paced learning from anywhere. With accelerated courses and up to 75 transfer credits accepted, those with prior college, military, or law enforcement experience can finish faster. It’s an efficient option for motivated students comfortable with virtual learning.

If you thrive on routine and personal interaction, the on-campus program provides a traditional college experience with in-person classes, real-time discussions, closer professor connections, and active participation in student organizations like the Criminal Justice Association. It’s ideal for hands-on, collaborative learners.

It’s also important to consider costs beyond tuition. Studying online could help you avoid commuting or relocating, and may even allow you to keep working full-time, which could significantly offset expenses. At the same time, the in-person experience provides long-term value through more immediate access to networking opportunities, internships, faculty mentorship, and campus resources.
