Alvernia University’s Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (MSOT) program prepares students for diverse roles across occupational therapy through mastery of foundational knowledge, hands-on experience, and community engagement. With two flexible degree tracks and an emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration, students interested in earning a Masters in Occupational Therapy gain essential skills in patient care, assessment, and team-based healthcare at Alvernia University.

About the Program

Accredited by the Accreditation Council of Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE), Alvernia MSOT graduates meet national standards. They are eligible to sit for the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) exam, which is required to become an Occupational Therapist Registered (OTR).

Alvernia offers two flexible degree tracks within its MSOT program, allowing students to pursue their career goals with an option that best suits their educational background and timeline.

  1. BSHS + MSOT Program: This five-year combined track provides a streamlined path, allowing students to move directly from the undergraduate Bachelor of Science in Health Science program into the MSOT program. This integrated approach is ideal for students seeking a continuous, focused route to earning both degrees efficiently.
  2. Post-Baccalaureate MSOT: This two-year track is designed for students with bachelor’s degrees in another field. It provides an accelerated curriculum and focuses intensively on occupational therapy courses and clinical placements tailored for career-changers or those advancing in healthcare.

Interprofessional Collaboration

Alvernia University’s interprofessional healthcare education brings nursing, occupational therapy, and physical therapy students together to collaborate in delivering patient-centered care. This approach fosters essential teamwork and communication skills, preparing students to work effectively within healthcare teams. Learning alongside other disciplines helps students appreciate each profession's unique roles in patient care and provides the skills and understanding needed for real-world healthcare environments.

Hands-On Experience

Alvernia students gain hands-on experience delivering patient care through the university’s innovative “clinic without walls” model. This includes partnerships with local organizations, participation in health fairs, and clinical practice at sites like the student-managed Health & Wellness Center. In these settings, students develop essential skills in patient assessment, intervention planning, and treatment across a range of needs, enhancing their adaptability and confidence. This immersive experience strengthens their ability to collaborate within healthcare teams, focusing on delivering client-centered, real-world care.

Career Opportunities

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for OTs is expected to rise substantially, with projected job growth of 11% from 2023 to 2033—a rate much higher than the average for other professions. This growth reflects the increasing need for occupational therapy services as healthcare expands and populations age.

Occupational therapists can work in a variety of healthcare, educational, and community settings, including:

  • Hospitals and Rehabilitation Centers – Providing therapy to help patients recover daily functions post-surgery or injury.
  • Outpatient Clinics – Assisting clients with specialized therapies for chronic conditions or specific needs.
  • Schools and Educational Facilities – Supporting children with developmental or learning challenges.
  • Home Health Services – Offering therapy within patients' homes to adapt living spaces.
  • Community Health Centers – Serving clients in wellness programs or mental health support.
  • Nursing Homes – Assisting elderly patients with mobility, adaptation, and independence.
