Alvernia Homecoming 2019

We are thrilled to host the entire Alvernia Family on campus this year for our annual Homecoming & Family Weekend.

This year will offer a mix of in-person and virtual events, at our Reading campus, as well as our regional campuses in Philadelphia and Schuylkill County, over the course of a week, beginning on Monday, Oct. 4 and continuing through Sunday, Oct. 10.

Monday, October 4

Blessing of the Animals | 12 p.m. | Reading Campus - Join us at the Grotto at Noon for this unique Alvernia tradition, honoring our patron saint, St. Francis. Be sure to bring your pet! If you can’t make it, it will also be live-streamed on the Mission & Ministry Instagram page.

 

Opening Prayer Service | 7 p.m. | Reading Campus and Zoom – Join the Alvernia community for an evening of prayer and reflection to officially begin the week. We will gather at 7:00 p.m. in the Holy Savior Chapel and share the event virtually via Zoom. There is limited space in the chapel, so be sure to register to receive the Zoom link.

Tuesday, October 5

Philadelphia Regional Event | 6-8 p.m. | Philadelphia, PA – We are hitting the road and taking Homecoming to South Philly. Join us at SouthHouse for a Happy Hour to connect with fellow Alvernians. SouthHouse is owned by alumni Emil Notarfrancesco ’05 and his brother, Anthony. This event is intended for Alumni and family members living in the greater Philadelphia area and our students at our Philadelphia campus. You can purchase tickets and register using this link.

Wednesday, October 6

Schuylkill Regional Event | 5:30-7:30 p.m. | Pottsville, PA - We are hitting the road and taking Homecoming to Schuylkill County. Join us at The Crimson House for a Happy Hour to connect with fellow Alvernians. The Crimson House is owned by alumna Maureen Challenger ’87 MEd ’03. This event is intended for Alumni and family members living in the greater Schuylkill County area and our students at our Schuylkill campus. You can purchase tickets and register using this link.

Thursday, October 7

Virtual Bingo | 7 p.m. | Zoom – You asked for it, so it’s back! Our most popular virtual event from the past year is a great way to bring us together from across the country. Last year, we had alumni from 13 states join us. Bingo will once again be hosted by Nick Yando ’07 and features many games and great prizes. This is a FREE event for all alumni, as well as parents, faculty and staff. You can register using this link.  

Friday, October 8

Women’s Soccer vs. York College | 4p.m. | Reading Campus  – Come to the stadium to support the Golden Wolves as we kick off the weekend for our athletic teams.

 

Athletic Hall of Fame Ceremony | 6 p.m. | Reading Campus – Please join us as we welcome the newest members to the Hall of Fame – Dale Curry (Baseball), Eric Franks ’11 (Men’s Soccer), Janell Lynch ’10 (Field Hockey, Indoor T&F and Softball), Art Schomp ’95 (Men’s Basketball), Rhiannon Sorrentino ’11 (Softball) and the 2005 Field Hockey team. This event will begin at 6:00 p.m. in the Helen & Tom Flynn Plex. You can purchase tickets and register using this link. 

Ohio Burn Unit | 7:30 p.m. | Reading Campus Quad - This is truly a one-of-a-kind event. Be prepared to be amazed as you see live performers work with fire in a way you never thought possible. Get your cameras ready for fire breathing, fireballs, pyrotechnics, and more! Seriously, this description does do them credit, you MUST SEE THIS SHOW! You can register for this event here.

Saturday, October 9

University Bookstore | All Day | Reading Campus and Online – Be sure to stop by the Bookstore (Student Center) to get your latest AU gear. Take advantage of your alumni discount! You can also check out what they offer online!

 

Party on the Quad | 1-4 p.m. | Reading Campus  Take a run on the obstacle course, grab a photo while sitting in the big red chair, compete against friends and family on the bungee run, or enjoy some Alvernia themed coloring pages. We’ll even have Central Park Bubbles here to keep you entertained and help you make your own giant bubbles. You might even end up INSIDE one of their amazing bubbles! No need to sign up, just stop by and join in on the fun for the whole Alvernia community. This is an event you don't want to miss!

 

All Campus Lunch | 11 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. | Reading Campus  Reminisce by having lunch in the Dining Hall or enjoy the recently renovated Holleran Patio. Both are in or around the Student Center. You can purchase tickets in advance here, or pay when you are ready to enjoy lunch. Lunch will be available from 11:00am-1:30pm.

 

Rosary |10:00 a.m. | Reading Campus  Start your day by saying the rosary with us at the Grotto. You can register using this link.

 

CollegeTowne Tours | 10 a.m. 12 p.m. 1 p.m. | Reading Campus – You have heard and read all about it, now see it for yourself. We will run shuttles from the Plex at 10:00 a.m., Noon and 1:00 p.m. They will take you downtown and drop you off in front of the building, where a Golden Guide will greet you and give you a tour of the facility. You will then shuttle back to campus. There is limited space on each shuttle, so please register for your preferred time here.

 

Athletic Alumni Games and Socials | 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. | Reading Campus – Were you a member of the Women’s Lacrosse, Women’s or Men’s Basketball teams? Come show off what skills you still have with fellow alumni, or just watch and socialize. The three teams will then gather in the Tailgating Lot (10:00 a.m. -Noon) to share stories of how good they used to be! To sign up for any of these, please use the specific links below.

Football Tailgating | 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. | Reading Campus – Join us to socialize and enjoy your favorite pre-game meals and snacks before the Noon kick off for football. This new Alvernia tradition has quickly become a popular place to gather with fellow Golden Wolves. Please be sure to stop by the alumni tent to say hi! Tailgating is open from 10:00 a.m. -Noon. Please be sure to check out the guidelines around tailgating here.

 

Golden Wolves Football | 12 p.m. | Reading Campus – Come cheer on the Golden Wolves as they take on Widener at Noon. If you were here two years ago, you know how exciting a great Homecoming game can be. Tickets are free to alumni this weekend if you sign up in advance, using this link. You can also purchase tickets on gameday for guests when you arrive.

 

The 5th Quarter | 3-5 p.m. | Reading Campus – Another popular Alvernia tradition! Join us from 3:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m., under the tent near Francis Hall, for some snacks and beverages. It’s a great way to wind down after the football game or get ready for the Field Hockey or Men’s Soccer game. You can purchase tickets here.

 

Golden Wolves Field Hockey | 4 p.m. | Reading Campus – Come cheer on the Alvernia Field Hockey team at the stadium as they take on Messiah at 4:00 p.m. Field Hockey Alumni – Join us for a social in the President’s Box celebrating our Field Hockey alumni over the years. Big Screen Movie: Space Jam: A New Legacy | 5:30 p.m. | Reading Campus PEC - The Looney Tunes are back on the court again, this time with NBA Superstar LeBron James. LeBron seeks the help of the Bugs Bunny and the rest of the Tune Squad to save his son from his new digital foe, Al G Rhythm. Complete with snacks and our very own big screen, this event is sure to be a slam dunk! Secure your tickets here.

 

Golden Wolves Men’s Soccer | 7 p.m. | Reading Campus - Come cheer on the Men’s Soccer team at the stadium, as they take on York College at 7:00 p.m. Men’s Soccer Alumni – Join us for a social in the President’s Box celebrating our Men’s Soccer alumni over the years. We will also be honoring our first soccer team from 1995 during the game. You can register using this link.

 

Big Screen Bingo | 8 p.m. | Reading Campus PEC - Bingo is back, and bigger than ever! It’s the same great prizes you’ve come to expect, but now we’re playing Alvernia’s favorite game on a GIANT SCREEN! Seriously, we’re bringing out our 20 foot inflatable screen for you and the whole family! If you’ve never played B-4, this is your chance to have some fun. Make sure your phone or tablet is charged if you want to use a digital card, but we’ll have physical ones available if you’d prefer. Secure your spot here.

Sunday, October 10

Mass | 9 a.m. | Reading Campus - Join the Alvernia community in worship Sunday at 9:00 a.m. for Mass in the Sacred Heart Chapel (460 Saint Bernardine St., Reading, PA 19607) to close out a week of Homecoming and Family Weekend events. If you are unable to join us in person, you can also join virtually over Zoom. Regardless of how you will be attending, please fill out the form, and all information will be sent to you in a confirmation email. *Please note regardless of vaccination status, masks must be worn by all in the Sacred Heart Chapel. Champagne Brunch | 10:15 a.m. | Reading Campus - Enjoy a brunch after Mass in the Francis Hall Atrium at 10:15 a.m. for our final Homecoming and Family Weekend event. Unwind, enjoy some food, and talk with Alvernia community members. You can register using this link.
