What are Graduate Assistantships?

Graduate Assistantships provide financial assistance for graduate students, allowing them to pursue a higher degree and apply knowledge and skills in a practical setting. Students not only gain valuable professional experience and participate in interesting course offerings, they are in a position to contribute significantly to their own intellectual development and the University as a whole.

 

Master’s level graduate students are required to take 9 credit hours each contracted semester and will receive tuition remission for those credits. Ph.D. level graduate students are required to take 6 credit hours each contracted semester and will receive tuition remission for those credits.

 

GA Eligibility & Requirements 

  • Must be accepted into the Graduate Program at Alvernia.
  • Must have a valid FAFSA on file.
  • Maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average.
  • Satisfy enrollment requirements.
  • Make satisfactory progress toward degree as defined by University policy.
  • Meet the requirements to be eligible for employment in the United States.
  • Must be able to work 20 hours per week.
  • Must be enrolled full-time throughout the assistantship.
  • Must provide a copy of their resume and Alvernia letter of acceptance into the Graduate program along with the Graduate Assistantship application.

Enrollment Management - Graduate Assistant

Summary of Duties: The Graduate Assistant for Admissions assists with all aspects of the recruitment of students. This student also learns about counselor travel territories, event management, and the daily visits.The Graduate Assistant for Admissions assists with all aspects of the recruitment of students. Major Responsibilities & Essential Functions:

  • Primary contact for the 9th grade visits from Berks County High Schools, coordinated by the Berks Business Education Coalition (BBEC). This is typically 25-30 visit days per year and includes a presentation on the College Search Process. These visits are an introduction to higher education for nearly 2,000 students every year.
  • Coordinate the Overnight/Shadow visit program for prospective students. This is a high yield visit for the office and is done in partnership with the Office of Residence Life.
  • Assist with the hiring, training, and management of the Tour Guide Program.

Institutional Review Board (IRB) & Institutional Research - Graduate Assistant

Summary of Duties: The incumbent in this position must be a qualified individual who supports institutional research, compliance, and the IRB function in various areas including protocol review, data review and analysis, complex correspondence and minutes, committee member liaison and office management.

Major Responsibilities & Essential Functions:

  • Maintain the IRB database
  • Screen incoming IRB applications for completeness and track application status
  • Distribute IRB applications to IRB members to review
  • Track all forms and communications regarding the IRB process
  • Schedule and attend IRB committee meetings
  • Take minutes at IRB meetings and submit for approval to the IRB Chair
  • Provide assistance with research compliance processes and protocols
  • Assist in the maintenance of the IR and IRB websites
  • Other duties related to review and analysis of research data, processes, and protocols may be assigned

Position Requirements:

  • Prior research experience and experience with IRB processes desirable

Library - Graduate Assistant

Summary of Duties: Works collaboratively with library staff to participate in all phases of the service activities of the library. Supports reference, instruction, circulation, and other public service operations of the library. Creates and maintains promotional, reference, and instructional material using traditional, electronic, social media, and other technologies. Participates in library-related research products.

Major Responsibilities & Essential Functions:

  • Creates promotional, reference, and instructional materials using audio, video, photo, and graphics editing software, and social media and other technologies. Collects and organizes digital and print promotional materials.
  • Represents the library and provides library information at campus events. 
  • Answers information-related questions by all means of contact and provides instruction using print and electronic resources as directed.
  • Assists with library administrative tasks as directed. 
  • Assists in management of the library's social media accounts by posting content and collecting and analyzing data
  • Participates in library-related research projects by collecting, organizing, and analyzing data. 
  • Participates in circulation functions including assisting in opening and closing of library. 
  • Demonstrates excellent customer service skills. 
  • Collaborates with campus departments and personnel.
  • Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills. 
  • Works well as a member of a team and independently; ability to handle multiple demands and to work under the direction of the librarian on duty.
  • Directs work of student assistants.

Marketing - Graduate Assistant

Summary of Duties: The Marketing Graduate Assistant position assists the marketing department with the execution of strategic marketing initiatives in conjunction with the departments marketing plans and campaigns, which support undergraduate, graduate, adult education and online recruitment. The Marketing GA will provide support to the marketing team, including the Marketing Director, the Director of Creative Services, the Senior Associate Director of Digital Marketing and the Marketing Specialist.

Graduate Assistant must be continually enrolled, full-time during the fall and spring semesters and in good academic and financial standing.

Major Responsibilities & Essential Functions:

  • Assist staff with developing content for recruitment materials, website and advertisement
  • Provide support for photography and videography, including scheduling and assisting with photo/video sessions and capturing, editing and archiving assets
  • Conduct market research, developing and implementing market surveys, conducting focus groups, etc., to capture market data for tracking ROI of marketing initiatives and providing support of marketing decisions
  • Assist staff in coordinating, interviewing, writing and editing of student, alumni, and faculty profiles and success stories
  • Assist staff with basic design as needed (postcards, flyers, t-shirts, social media graphics, web banner ads)
  • Assist staff in writing and developing social media posts in support of priority programs and recruitment events and initiatives
  • Proofread and edit copy for marketing collateral, website and advertising content
  • Attend and assist with various recruitment and marketing events as needed

Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, Communications, Business, or related field and current enrollment in an Alvernia graduate program, preferably the MBA program
  • A passion for storytelling, writing and content development with excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills
  • Working knowledge of various social media platforms and how brands utilize them for storytelling
  • Experience in photography, videography and design, with completion of coursework in each
  • Experience with the Adobe Creative Suite, including working knowledge of Photoshop, InDesign; knowledge of Illustrator, Premier and After Effects are a plus

PhD in Leadership - Graduate Assistant

Summary of Duties: The incumbent in this position works collaboratively with the Department Chair/Program Directors and assists in the administrative and research tasks and activities of the Ph.D. and M.A. in Leadership Programs including data collection, data management and analysis, and report writing. This position is also responsible for assisting Department faculty in scholarship activities related to courses, grants and active research studies.  

Major Responsibilities & Essential Functions:

  • Assist in data collection for internal and external reports including updates of annual publications, newsletters and materials for the Ph.D. and M.A. in Leadership Programs.
  •  Conduct library searches for faculty, courses and/or research studies.
  • Assist with compiling and analyzing data related to the Ph.D. and M.A. in Leadership Programs.
  • Research current trends and best practices for the Ph.D. and M.A. in Leadership Programs in higher education. 
  • Participate in the Ph.D. and M.A. in Leadership Programs events throughout the year. 
  • Represent the Ph.D. and M.A. in Leadership Programs to the public, including recruitment events. 
  • Promote Franciscan ideals and adherence to the Mission of the University. 
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Position Requirements:

  • Master’s degree and current enrollment in Alvernia Ph.D. program.
  • Interest in quantitative and qualitative research, statistics, and computer applications.
  • Proficiency with SPSS, MS Office, especially Excel, Word, and Power Point.
  • Excellent writing and analytical skills. 
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail are a must. 
  • Ability to work independently and strong work ethic. 
  • Ability to prioritize work, manage time and multi-task appropriately.
