Christopher Wise

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your interest in the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program at Alvernia University.  On behalf of Alvernia administration, faculty, and staff, it is my pleasure to welcome you to our website and introduce you to our newly developing DPT Program, the first program for the education of physical therapists in Berks County!

Let me first congratulate you on your decision to consider a career in Physical Therapy. We are excited that you have chosen a profession where you will have the opportunity to change lives on a daily basis.  At Alvernia, we are extremely excited to be working toward the development of an innovative educational experience that distinguishes us from other programs.  As you consider your educational options, I invite you to ask the question, “Why Alvernia?!”

The Alvernia University Department of Physical Therapy is committed to providing an exceptional educational experience that embodies 3 primary themes:

Servant-Leadership: Through a variety of altruistic service-learning experiences, students actively engage the local community and beyond. The Oakbrook Physical Therapy Center is a student-organized pro bono clinic in which students provide Physical Therapy care to the local community under the supervision of licensed Physical Therapists. In fulfillment of course requirements, students engage in providing care within the classroom setting and off campus. Students also engage in a variety of other volunteer experiences, including a third year mission trip.

Clinical Reasoning: Throughout the program, learning experiences emphasize the development of critical thinking, self-reflection, and problem-solving that leads to innovative, evidence-based solutions.

Movement-Scientists: As valued members of the interprofessional team, students learn the important role of the Physical Therapist in appreciating human movement. Through deliberative analysis and hypothesis testing, Physical Therapists seek to apply the current best evidence to solve clinical challenges.Perhaps the most compelling reason to consider Alvernia, however, is our commitment to establish a culture of excellence that promotes the imperative, “To Learn, To Love, and To Serve”.  A wise man once said, “Education is not the means of showing people how to get what they want. Education is an exercise through which enough people will learn to want what is worth having.  No true education can leave out the moral and spiritual dimensions of human life and striving”.  Toward that end, our primary objective is to develop clinically-competent, community-conscious graduates who are prepared to think critically and serve altruistically as they become life-long learners, reflective professionals, engaged citizens, and ethical leaders with moral courage.  I wish you well and hope that I may have the opportunity to join you in your journey!
