Associate Professor of Chemistry

Biography

Dr. Stephen Campion came to Alvernia with industrial experience. His interest, training, and background have been consistently focused on health-related science. His doctoral research was in enzymology involving the physical and kinetic analysis of DNA polymerases from human neuroblastoma cells. A postdoctoral fellowship in Cancer biology provided him training in cellular signal transduction and a detailed study of the protein engineering of the anti-mitogenic epidermal grouwth factor peptide analogs.

The increased availability of genomic data and tools for protein modeling, over the past decade, gave him a new focus on the evolution of protein structure-function, and his discovery of th estrategic employment of aromatic chemistry at critical locations in extracellular protein architecture has been the sole focus of his research for the past seventeen years. His undergraduate degree in Chemistry included a summer internship studying the pharmacokinetics of the antihypertensive drug Propranolol in the Toxicology Department of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, and provided a significant exposure to multiple analytical procedures and instrumentation. Seven years teaching drug chemistry in the Medicinal Chemistry Ph.D. program at the University of Iowa's College of Pharmacy provided him a thorough understanding of human anatomy, physiology, pathology, and pharmacology.
