Job Summary:

The Nursing Resource Center and Simulation Lab Educator will work collaboratively with department leadership, faculty and staff to ensure evidenced-based clinical standards and simulation best practices are reflected in all simulation activities. The Lab Educator will provide curricular and assessment guidance for educational activities related to simulation. This includes collaboration with the Lab Director and Nursing Lab Staff to design, implement, facilitate, and debrief mannequin-based and standardized patient programs. Knowledge of nursing education and simulation pedagogy is essential. This position is a 10-month, full-time placement. Availability during evenings and weekends is required.

  • NRC and Sim Lab Operations
    • Provide technical support for human patient simulators, task trainers and multimedia peripherals; beds, headwalls, monitors, and other health care equipment.
    • Notify the Director when an upgrade to software and equipment is identified or equipment must be replaced or repaired.
    • Review new equipment operation and offer instruction sessions to simulation staff.
    • Provide recommendations for equipment and supply purchase to Lab Director.
    • Anticipates supplies needed for each clinical course.
    • Order, organize, and stock NRC and simulation lab supplies.
    • Assist with and oversee the set-up and take down of simulation laboratory equipment.
    • Remain current with developments in the field of simulation technology and learning theory.
  • Nursing Lab Assistants
    • Provide orientation to new Nursing Lab Assistants and oversee their training.
    • Support the ongoing training needs of all Nursing Lab Assistants.
    • Provide lab coverage when assistants are ill, unavailable, or require personal time off.
  • Faculty Collaboration and Support
    • Collaborate with clinical faculty in the design and implementation of learning scenarios using standardized patients.
    • Collaborate and communicate with clinical nursing faculty to schedule timely remediation of fundamental nursing skills.
    • Coordinate senior level campus clinical and boot camp simulation activities.
  • Inter-professional Simulation
    • Support interdisciplinary and community use of the Nursing Resource Center. 
    • Collaborate effectively with faculty from Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Social Work, and Athletic Training.
    • Participate in the implementation of inter-professional simulation activities.
  • Teaching Responsibilities
    • Participate in assessment of student learning activities to maximize the potential for students to learn what is necessary to meet prescribed program outcomes.
    • Coordinate remediation of nursing skills for students.
    • Implement, facilitate, and debrief simulation-based learning and assessment activities that include mannequin-based and standardized patient modalities.
    • Participate in senior level campus clinical and boot camp simulation activities.
  • Simulation Development
    • Support the development of outcome evaluation measures for student performance in simulation experiences.
    • Ensure that best practice and evidenced-based research is applied in simulation program development.
    • Maintain prevalence in simulation education through the review of relevant journals and attendance at local/regional conferences.
    • Assist with the review of all Patient Care Scenarios on a quarterly basis, to ensure each case replicates evidenced-based, current health care practice.
  • Standardized Patient Program
    • Recruit, orient, and schedule Standardized Patients.
    • Identify opportunities for expanding the volunteer, Standardized Patient Program.
    • Participate in the revision and development of cases to be used in simulation with Standardized Patients.
    • Organize and conduct training of Standardized Patients.
  • Service to the University
    • Promote Franciscan ideals and adherence to the Mission of the University.

    • Attend Nursing Department meetings.
    • Conduct tours of the Nursing Resource Center during open house, homecoming, connection day events, and special visitors.
    • Serve as building safety co-captain, which includes initiating university safety procedures during active shooter and fire drills.



  • Commitment to the mission statement, core values and goals of Alvernia University.
  • Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN) required.
  • Current Professional Nursing License in Pennsylvania.
  • Minimum of 3-years’ experience in clinical nursing practice.
  • Minimum of 2-years’ experience in an accredited nursing education program
  • Strong foundation in clinical skills including but not limited to; physical assessment, patient education, common clinical procedures, documentation, and interpersonal communication.
  • Demonstrate evidence of teaching ability in simulation and skills instruction.
  • Willingness to obtain certification in simulation education.
  • Ability to problem-solve and work independently.
  • Ability to excel at details, prioritize, multi-task, and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Physical ability to lift, move, and set-up simulation lab equipment weighing up to 50 lbs., with assistance.


Physical Requirements:

  • Attendance is required in order to perform the duties of this job.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift 15 pounds at times.
