Carol Schwanger, MM
Associate Professor of Music
Carol N. Schwanger is Associate Professor of Music at Alvernia University, where she has served on the faculty since 1976. She is the 2006 recipient of the Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Foundation Award for Excellence in Teaching. Previous awards have been Alvernia’s Sister Donatilla Award for "long and distinguished service" and "Certificate of Teaching Excellence" from Montgomery County Community College.
Carol holds a Bachelor of Science in Music Education from West Chester State College and a Master of Music in Bassoon Performance from the North Texas State University. She has taught music at Kutztown State College and Muhlenberg College, and at various studios of music in the Reading area. Carol maintains an active performance career, playing bassoon in numerous recitals and concerts of classical music every year. She has performed with Pottstown Symphony Orchestra, Reading Symphony Orchestra, Reading Pops Orchestra, Providence Chamber Orchestra, Berks Chamber Orchestra, FYVE Woodwind Quintet, Chandler Chamber Ensemble, Pottstown Band, and numerous other groups. At Alvernia, Carol has organized and performed in many faculty recitals and has sung in choirs for Masses and other special events. She has given numerous guest lectures on musical topics both on and off campus.
Carol currently serves as Chair of the Department of Fine and Performing Arts. During her career at Alvernia, Carol has also served as the chair of the Department of Music, chair of the Department of Art and Music, Faculty Advising Committee, Faculty Grievance Committee, Rank and Tenure Committee, Faculty Standard Subcommittee for Middle States, College-Wide Steering Committee for Middle States Self-Evaluation, and Faculty-Student Grievance Committee. Currently she is a member of numerous committees, and is a past-president of the Faculty Council.
While at Alvernia, Carol has taught over thirty different courses, many of which she developed for specific groups of Alvernia students. Some of these courses are Multicultural Music, World Music, Music and Health, Women in the Arts, Experiencing Music, and Jazz. She has taught in the College Success and Honors programs. Carol served as a co-leader for an Alvernia sponsored trip to Italy.
Carol has served as a judge for the arts in the Berks Best Scholarship Contest. She is a past vice-president of the Boyertown Area Schools Music League and a past-president of the Lutheran Church Women of St. John’s Church. She is currently a member of the Senior Choir and Bell Choir of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Pottstown, and of the Orchestra Committee of the Pottstown Symphony Orchestra. Mrs. Schwanger lives with her husband, Vernon, owner of The Sound Proposition, in Boyertown. They have three children: Vern, an industrial engineer, Daniel, a high school band director, and Sara, a chemistry major at Lebanon Valley College. The Schwangers have two granddaughters.
