The MSAT program is designed to accommodate 28 professional phase students per cohort presently. Students will enter the MSAT program by one of the following routes:
1) Option 1: Traditional freshman: will apply to Alvernia University and upon acceptance to the university, will begin their pre-professional coursework for the MSAT program. During the first three years of study, these students will focus on the completion of the undergraduate requirements for a degree in Healthcare Science, along with any required pre-requisite coursework needed for the MSAT degree. Students will formally notify the MSAT Program Director of their intention to complete the professional phase of the Master of Science in Athletic Training Degree during the Spring semester of the third year of study. Notification must be rec’d by March 1st of the spring semester (third year).
The Program Director will complete a review of the student’s transcript to ensure the following criteria are met or are in process:
1) a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, and
2) a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in the following pre-requisite courses (Must pass these courses with a “C or better”):

There are 28 available spots in each professional phase cohort. Students who meet the standards listed above will be invited to meet with the MSAT Program Faculty. Preference will be given to those students with a demonstrated high overall GPA and a demonstrated high GPA for the pre-requisite courses. A review of candidates may continue until the all available slots are filled per cohort.
Students who either choose to forego the professional phase of the MSAT degree or who do not meet the retention standard, have the ability to graduate from the health care science program at the end of the fourth year once all remaining required coursework is completed. These students should meet with the HCS Program Director once this path is chosen to ensure all degree requirements are met. Please see “Option 3: Alternative matriculation (Opt-out)
2) Option 2: Transfer students and/or post-baccalaureate students:
Transfer students may enter the program at an appropriate spot to be determined by the MSAT Program Director. Transfer students who have neither completed an undergraduate degree nor the required pre-requisite courses, may apply to enter the pre-professional phase of the program. Upon acceptance to the University, these students will work with the University Registrar/MSAT Program Director to determine their transfer profile as well as the most appropriate point of entry into the pre-professional program.

Pre-professional students who have completed an undergraduate degree and the necessary pre-requisite courses may apply to enter the professional phase of the master of athletic training program. These students will apply through Graduate Admissions and upon acceptance to the University, will matriculate through the professional phase of the MSAT program. Graduate admission occurs on a rolling basis. A review of applications may continue until the all available slots are filled.
Along with your completed application accompanied by $50 non-refundable application fee, you’ll need to provide a few supporting materials. Pre-professional candidates must complete a undergraduate degree as well as all prerequisite courses prior to starting the MSAT program. Candidates must also demonstrate:
- Complete formal application through the ATCAS system
- An earned bachelor’s degree
- A minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in below pre-requisite courses (Must pass these courses with a “C" or better:
- General Biology with lab (4 credits)
- Anatomy and Physiology 1 and 2 with labs (8 total credits)
- General Chemistry with lab (4 credits)
- General Physic with lab (4 credits, and can be non-calculus based)
- Nutrition (Sports nutrition is preferable) (3 credits)
- Kinesiology with lab
- Exercise Physiology with lab
- Introduction to Psychology
- Psychology: Human Development over the lifespan
- Math: Statistics
- Transfer students must also provide proof of current certifications: First Aid -CPR with AED (Adult, Child, Infant) for the Professional Rescuer (or equivalent)
***Candidates who do not meet the prerequisite admissions requirements may meet with the Program Director to discuss options.**
Students who meet these standards and begin their professional phase coursework will only be required to complete graduate-level MSAT coursework.

3) Option 3: Alternative matriculation (Opt-out): An undergraduate student may decide to “opt-out” of the professional phase of the athletic training program. If a student chooses this option, they may choose to complete the remainder of the healthcare science major. The student would be responsible for the completion of all outstanding healthcare science coursework necessary to graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Science degree. The student should work closely with the Program Director of HCS to ensure all outstanding requirements are met.
A pre-professional phase student would also have the option change to any major within the institution. Students who choose this option should seek the advice of the respective major department chair, as well as the office of the Registrar, regarding Alvernia’s internal transfer process. The student would be responsible for the completion of all program/degree requirements necessary to graduate with the selected degree
Post-baccalaureate students are not eligible for the opt-out option.
