Center for Student Success
The Center for Student Success is the home of academic services that play a critical role in students’ success at all levels of their college experience. Together, they form a network of advising and other learning services that provide students with opportunities for self-exploration, skill building, and career readiness.
First Year Experience oversees the support aspects of students’ first year of college, beginning with summer Connection Days, when students are welcomed as members of the Alvernia community, and lasting through the assignment of students to advisors in their major at the end of their first year. As part of their first year, students are required to take First Year Seminar, a course that prepares students to successfully meet faculty expectations. Students’ first year seminar instructor is their academic advisor for their first year of college.
The Genesis Experience was created to support students through the process of selecting a major. Through individual advising, access to information and resources, an optional credit-bearing course, and workshops, students learn about themselves and the full range of academic options available to them. Program staff and faculty advisors help students better understand themselves so they can confidently choose their path. They also work with students to provide them with resources and tools to help them explore majors and the careers they lead to.
The Learning Center helps students acquire or improve skills that will enable them to succeed academically. Through free one-on-one tutoring, peer tutors guide students in improving the skills and understanding specific to the courses they are taking. Students schedule appointments that fit their schedule, get help with individual questions, and work at their own pace.
Freshman Foundations is a freshman year experience intended to create a strong foundation for success in college. Support comes primarily through regular academic advising and focused attention to study skills. Because students admitted to Alvernia through the Freshman Foundations program are Alvernia freshmen, they will take the majority of their courses with freshmen from across the University. This ensures that they encounter a broad range of faculty and students, develop a realistic sense of the academic standards and expectations at Alvernia, develop independent judgment, and enjoy full membership in the Alvernia community.
Career Services assists students with all aspects of the career readiness process. Specific services include individual career counseling, annual career fairs, and a range of workshops that target facets of the process: how to find and prepare for an internship, interview skills, the job search, resume writing, and more. In addition, Career Services maintains internship and job databases that allow students to access the most current opportunities.
