Personal Health


Experiential learning is at the heart of Alvernia University’s academic programs.  Students have the opportunity to function in environments and agencies that serve many people in our region.  Experts in the field are available to students as the classroom and practice settings come together.

There are many laws, policies, and regulations that govern agencies providing services to vulnerable populations and the general public.  In addition to meeting academic program requirements, students need to be of good health and character to participate in these opportunities.

Legal contracts (affiliation agreements) have been developed in partnership with agencies that allow our students to work with a variety of clients, patients, and children.  Alvernia University is committed to uphold the standards in our agreements.

The following tables describe common requirements outlined in Alvernia’s agency affiliation agreements.  Please note that additional mandates may be required with individual agencies.  Work with your academic department field coordinator or secretary to verify agency requirements:

  Medical History   Written documentation from healthcare provider that a medical history has been performed within one year of starting academic program at Alvernia.

  Physical Exam   Written documentation from healthcare provider of physical exam performed within one year of starting academic program at Alvernia.  

Mail, fax, or email to Health and Wellness Center from healthcare provider (physician, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant).

 
             
             
             
  Tuberculosis (TB) Testing   Two negative skin tests; one within the past year.  

Nursing, Occupational Therapy, and Education departments schedule student skin tests with the Health and Wellness Center.

All other students schedule individual appointment with the Health and Wellness Center.
 
             
             
             
  Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR)   Proof of immunity against measles, mumps, and rubella. Two immunizations are required are required or blood titer (submit lab report).  

Submit to Health and Wellness Center.

 
             
             
             
  Hepatitis B   Three doses or signed declination.  

Submit to Health and Wellness Center.

 
             
             
             
  Varicella Vaccine   Completed Varicella series or a positive antibody test documenting immunity.  

Submit to Health and Wellness Center.

 
             
             
             
  Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis (Tdap) Vaccine   Proof of immunization within a 10 year period.  

Submit to Health and Wellness Center.

 
             
             
             
  Influenza Vaccine   Proof of influenza immunization with current seasonal influenza vaccine or signed declination.  

Attend a Flu-Vaccine Clinic or make appointment with Health and Wellness Center.

 
             
             
             
  Pneumovax Vaccine   Proof of immunization or signed declination.  

Submit to Health and Wellness Center.

 
             
             
             
  Drug Screen  

10-panel urine drug screen will be performed according to national and SJMC standards (includes marijuana, opiates, cocaine, amphetamines, PCP, barbiturates, benzodiazepine, methaqualone, propoxyphene, methadone).
Please refer to academic department policy for “positive results” procedure or consult the Health and Wellness Center.

 
  1. St. Joseph Medical Center (SJMC) is the designated laboratory. Testing locations are listed on the Referral Form.
  2. Obtain the Referral Form from your academic department secretary.
  3. Referral Form and photo ID are required for testing.
  4. Each student will sign a release to allow SJMC to report results directly to the Health and Wellness Center.
 
             
           

 

Health Updates

Prevent the flu by being vigilant; do not share drinks or utensils, avoid crowded areas during flu season when possible, get adequate rest, cover your cough, wash hands or use hand sanitizers often and get an annual flu shot.
