Counseling Services

As part of the Health & Wellness Center, we offer counseling support to Alvernia University’s students. Counseling Services is located at the Health & Wellness Center in the lower level of Veronica Hall.

The staff at the Health & Wellness Center believes that taking good care of your emotional health is an important part of a successful education at Alvernia University. Our licensed psychologist is available Monday through Friday by appointment. Please stop in or give us a call at 610-568-1467 (ext. 1467 from a campus phone) to schedule with our psychologist or counseling intern.

Many students find that talking to an unbiased third party can help gain perspective on a current emotional problem. Students often discover that the visit to our counselor helps build confidence in dealing with the daily struggles associated with college life.

We often see students reach out to Counseling Services for reasons such as:

  • Anger management
  • Self-esteem issues
  • Relationship/family issues
  • Adjusting to college life
  • Loneliness, loss, or depression
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Substance use/abuse
  • Eating disorders

If you or someone you know is struggling emotionally, please contact our office for an appointment. If you are not sure that you want/need to schedule with our counselor, please take a confidential on-line screening. This screening will take only a few minutes and will determine whether an appointment should be scheduled. Access these FREE, CONFIDENTIAL screenings here.

Common Questions

How do I know if I need counseling?

Students who seek counseling do so because they are experiencing some form of discomfort or dissatisfaction in their personal lives. They may have problems in their relationships with others or concerns about their personal adequacy or competence. Many experience anxiety or depression without really knowing why. At times, students may also experience a lack of career direction. These and many other concerns are common reasons for seeking the help of a counselor.

How do I make an appointment?

You can call our office at 610-568-1467, stop in and schedule an appointment with the secretary or e-mail Dr. Kreider directly.

What can I expect from counseling?

In the beginning stage of counseling, the counselor will ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire about your concerns to gain a deeper understanding of you and your life situations. As counseling proceeds, trust between you and your counselor will build and a working partnership will develop. The counselor will work with you to explore your feelings, reach your goals, and resolve your concerns. As you gain an understanding of yourself and your feelings, the counselor will work with you to develop and improve your life skills. Please remember, that a successful counseling partnership is dependent on you being an active participant.

How many appointments will I need?

The number of times you meet with a counselor depends on the nature of the problem. Some issues can be dealt with in a few sessions; however some require multiple sessions. If ongoing counseling is required, the counselor will discuss options for these services with you.

What about confidentiality?

Counseling Services maintains strict standards of confidentiality. We will not release any records of your counseling or discuss your case with anyone, unless you give us your written consent. No record of counseling goes into your administrative school records, and school officials are not notified that you are receiving counseling. Family members will not be notified that you are in counseling unless you request us to, and we will not speak to them about your counseling without your permission. Under very extraordinary conditions, such as when a student's life is in danger, or when the safety of others is at risk, confidentiality may need to be broken. Feel free to discuss any concerns about confidentiality with your counselor.
