H1N1 Update, September 21, 2009

The presence of H1N1 on college campuses across the country has been getting much attention in recent weeks. It is our intention to ensure that the Alvernia campus community is kept informed about the status of this, or any other outbreak on our campus. Therefore, this is the second in our series of periodic updates to the University community.

As of this writing, none of our students has been positively diagnosed with H1N1 flu. As indicated in our first update, two students were asked to leave University housing and cease attending classes until flu-like symptoms subsided, in keeping with our published University policy concerning those symptoms. Both of those students were cleared for return within three days. No other students have yet been asked to leave University housing or cease attending classes, as of this writing.

A question that has been posed is “what things should I keep on hand in case of viral illness?” According to Dr. Claire Murphy, our Director of Health Services, such things as a thermometer, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and over-the-counter cold remedies are likely to be helpful. Aspirin and aspirin-containing medicines should be avoided in children and young adults who suffer from a viral illness, including the flu.
