H1N1 Update, November 19, 2009

This is the seventh in our series of periodic updates, as part of our ongoing effort to ensure that all are informed about the status of this or any other outbreak in our University community.

1.  Expansion of Vaccination Program

Thanks to all who have participated in our H1N1 vaccination program over the past two weeks. We are happy to announce that we have clearance from the PA Department of Health to use our remaining supply of vaccine to provide vaccinations to members of our extended Alvernia family. That means we can offer vaccinations to some members of our students’ and faculty/staff members’ own families, who meet certain specific criteria, as outlined below.
We still must restrict vaccinations to people who fall into one or more of the following groups:

  • People 18 to 24 years of age.
  • Pregnant women.
  • People who live with or care for children younger than 6 months of age.
  • Health care and emergency medical services workers; this includes all OT, AT, and Nursing students.
  • People 25-64 years of age who have certain health conditions such as HIV, diabetes, or heart or lung disease.
Any family members of our students, faculty, or staff who fall into one or more of those groups may contact our Health and Wellness Center (610.568.1467) for an appointment. At present, we will be able to make appointments during these periods: 8:30 – 9:30 a.m. and 2:00 – 4:00 p.m., Monday-Friday (except for University holidays).

2.  Vaccinations at Schuylkill and Philadelphia Campuses…

…are scheduled for November 23 and November 30, respectively. Watch campus bulletin boards for specific information.

3.  Symptoms Prevalence

Since our last update (November 9), 6 students have been asked to cease attending classes and refrain from participation in other University activities, until flu-like symptoms have subsided, in keeping with our published University policy concerning those symptoms. Those who are resident students also were asked to leave University housing. 3 of those students have been cleared for return, as of this writing. The University is aware that 3 of our students have been positively diagnosed with H1N1 flu. They are among those who were cleared for return some weeks ago.

4.  During this season of Thanksgiving, many thanks to…

…everyone who’s been helping to see us through this situation, and particularly to our friends on the Health Services, Facilities, Residence Life, Public Safety, and Bookstore staffs!
