Alvernia Receives Silver Award from United Way

United WayAlvernia College received the prestigious Silver Award from the United Way of Berks County in recognition of exemplary employee participation in the 2005 worksite campaign.

Chairman, President, and CEO of Sovereign Bancorp and Sovereign Bank Jay Sidhu and his wife, Sherry, co-chairs of the 2006 campaign, recognized President Thomas F. Flynn and the College community on Monday, August, 21, at the kickoff of the 2006 employee campaign. 

According to the United Way, organizations whose employees contribute an average of $65-$94.99, per person, are eligible for the Silver Award. Alvernia’s average employee contribution for 2005 was $78. When combined with a participation rate of 54%, and overall increases in giving by 54% by College employees in the last five years, Alvernia emerged as the Silver Award Winner.

Mr. Sidhu recognized Alvernia for supporting the United Way of Berks County for the last fifteen years: “Alvernia’s contributions have been making a difference in the community.”

He then added he was pleased to recognize Alvernia because, “Alvernia is an institution that develops and shapes the values of today’s students and is guided by a noble vision of developing great human beings.”
