Ginny Hand, Chief of Staff to Thomas McMahon, Mayor of the City of Reading, has been appointed as the new director of the Center for Community Engagement, a community-based interdisciplinary program launched by the College in 2006, to link Alvernia with the Greater Reading area, to expand community-based learning experiences for students while strengthening the College’s commitment to civic engagement.

“Ginny is ideally suited for this post,” explained President Tom Flynn. “Her sensitivity to community needs, connections to diverse leaders, and experience in the classroom, community, and City Hall make her the right person at the right time.”

Hand has a master’s degree in Counseling from Long Island University and a bachelor’s from St. Thomas Aquinas College. Prior to serving as the Tom McMahon’s chief advisor, she was the Volunteer Coordinator for McMahon’s election campaigns. Hand’s administrative appointment at Alvernia marks a return to higher education. She has served as Assistant Dean of Graduate and Continuing Studies at Alvernia, as the Director of the Lancaster Center of Lebanon Valley College, and as the Director of Continuing Education and as an adjunct faculty member at St. Thomas Aquinas College.

Joining Hand in a newly created position as Associate Director of Community-Based Learning is Dr. Jodi Radosh, a tenured professor of communication at Alvernia and an involved community member.

In her new role, Radosh will work toward making the community an essential part of the Alvernia curriculum. Through arranging in-depth internships and service learning courses, short-term immersion experiences and international service trips, Radosh can help provide a learning laboratory for Alvernia’s students through the vehicle of community engagement.

Radosh has a doctoral degree in Mass Media and Communications and master’s degree in journalism, both from Temple University. She holds a bachelor’s degree in communications and English from Rutgers University.  Radosh is a media analyst for local television stations and has extensive broadcast experience as a television reporter, anchor, and news director for several stations in Berks and Lancaster Counties including WGAL-TV and Blue Ridge Cable Television.

The Center for Community Engagement moves to the College’s Upland Center, at 540 Upland Avenue in August, enhancing the Center’s role as a gateway to campus and an accessible resource to Greater Reading and the region.
