Alvernia Class Partners with Local Teens to Serve Community

Catholic EducationEducation majors preparing to be special education teachers partnered with special needs teens enrolled in the “Transition House” program operated by the Berks County Intermediate Unit to serve the community in 2006-07.

The project was the brainchild of Dr. Mary Schreiner, assistant professor of education. Some of the service projects Schreiner’s class did this year included: removing invasive species plants and raking at Nolde Forest, engaging in recreational activities with the elderly at St. Joseph’s Villa, assisting in care and exercising of animals at the Humane League, sewing quilts with Campus Ministry for women at Opportunity House, and setting up food and clothing drives on campus to be donated to third world countries.

Students also worked with partners who are Alvernia employees doing work for the Library, Facilities, and Education Department.

The college students and local high school students ended their year of service with a celebratory picnic in Nolde Forest.
