Tonia Knight, a student in the Master of Arts in Community Counseling program at Alvernia was recently awarded a $2,000 scholarship by the local chapter of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). For over 130 years, AAUW has worked to empower women as individuals, improve the lives of women and their families, and advocate for policies that advance gender equity for women.
According to Mrs. Donna Sartain, Chair of the AAUW Reading Branch Graduate Scholarship Committee, each year AAUW announces scholarship opportunities for local women pursuing graduate education. Support for the scholarships awarded comes from an annual fundraising activity called the Book Bonanza. Successful scholarship applicants must demonstrate quality academic performance at the graduate level and demonstrate a professional work history and career goals that represent the philosophical tenets of AAUW. Applicants must also present letters of recommendations from individuals familiar with their personal, academic and professional characteristics. A financial need for the scholarship must also be demonstrated.
AAUW’s Book Bonanza for 2013 will be held at Vanity Fair Outlet in Wyomissing, PA from July 11 – 14. Individuals can support this local initiative by donating books to AAUW and visiting the Book Bonanza event.
