Enrolling in an MBA program is an excellent way to develop business leadership and management skills. But where does a person go to learn the management of non-profit organizations? That’s where Leadership Berks plays a valuable role.
The Leadership Berks program provides current and emerging leaders with training on best practices in nonprofit management and board governance, as well as issues-based community orientation. A networking event held on April 11, from 5–7 p.m. at the Stirling Guest Hotel in Reading, Pa., for those interested in learning more about the program.
Attendees must register in advance by emailing Jennifer.Goggins@alvernia.edu or by calling 610-796-5038. This non-credit program runs from September to June and is limited to 35 participants. Alvernia will also have information for attendees regarding their Graduate and Adult Education programs. Leadership Berks Alumni are eligible for reduced cost graduate tuition.
It’s only natural that Leadership Berks is run by Alvernia University since service to others is an essential characteristic of Alvernia’s Franciscan heritage.
“Alvernia believes it’s important to give back to the community in leadership and giving of one’s time and Leadership Berks connects community organizations with mid to senior level employees,” explains Toni Eckert Director, Leadership Berks and Business Outreach at Alvernia. “Graduates of Leadership Berks must serve on a community board for one year.” Leadership Berks has delivered over 150 service learning projects and included service learning as a program requirement since 1985.
Graduate of Alvernia MBA Program and Leadership Berks Calls Program Insightful and Highly Informative:
Michael Fischetti earned his MBA from Alvernia and enrolled in the Leadership Berks program the following year.
With seven years of his professional career already behind him, Fischetti enrolled in graduate school and found it easy to apply his work experience to what he was learning in the classroom. Looking back on his MBA classes, Fischetti now sees the correlation between his graduate studies and the business side of the nonprofit world. What was missing though, was Fischetti’s knowledge of his own community and the needs of so many people.
“Before my experience with Leadership Berks, I donated money, but not time,” says Fischetti. “This program helps me understand how community organizations operate, what their needs are, and how I can help.”
“Nonprofit organizations need financial resources to survive, but it’s more than just money that allows these organizations to be successful. It’s the people who drive the success of any initiative or program. It’s the volunteers who donate their time to make sure people receive the help they need. It’s the fortunate members of a community who must lead by example to offer hope and a bright future to those less fortunate. Leadership Berks taught me how to work closely with other community leaders so that our neighbors, friends, and coworkers know that help is close by.”
Fischetti’s typical work week is 60-65 hours and he spends half the year traveling due to his position as the Director of Human Resource Operations for Carpenter Technology Corporation. He’s also a husband and the father of two – in other words, a very busy man – but he understands the importance of playing a role in the community.
Since graduating from Leadership Berks, he served on the Board of Directors at Berks Women in Crisis for four years, Opportunity House HR Committee, and the I-LEAD Charter School Steering Committee. He currently sits on the Penn State Berks Advisory Board, University of Pennsylvania Wharton School HR Advisory Committee, the Greater Reading Economic Partnership Board, United Way Founders Council, and will join St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation Board in July, in addition to two industry boards.
According to Fischetti, “Leadership Berks has provided me with the tools I needed to help impact the lives of those around me. I now know how nonprofit organizations work, their role in the community, and how they address the overall needs of our community.”
In addition to the contributions he personally makes to his community, his position in Human Resources enabled him to create two programs at the Carpenter Technology Corporation to manage corporate contributions and promote employee volunteerism through the Carpenter CARES program.
