Jon Clinch headlines Greater Reading Literary Festival at Alvernia

Jon Clinch, author of the highly acclaimed novel, Finn, will discuss his bestselling continuation of Mark Twain’s legendary book, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, during the Greater Reading Literary Festival at Alvernia College from October 11 to October 31.  The festival is an annual two-week celebration of literature.
The festival is packed with lectures from world-renowned and regional writers in addition to workshops and seminars. All events are hosted by Alvernia College at the Reading campus and are free and open to the public. This year’s theme is “A Sense of Place.” The festival is part of the county-wide Reading Reads program.

 

Events are as follows:

  • October 11 -- Official Kick-off Wine and Cheese Reception sponsored by Alumni Affairs.  The English/Communication/CIS Department will host its annual alumni gathering from 6-8 p.m. in the newly renovated Crusader Café.  Internationally recognized photojournalist, Heidi Reuter, will host an exhibition of her works.
  • October 12 -- Author Jon Clinch will discuss his first highly acclaimed novel—Finn. His work has received rave reviews by The New York Times, The Washington Post, USA Today, and others.  The story continues the legacy of Mark Twain’s masterpiece, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Location: Bernardine Lecture Hall at 1:00 p.m.
  • October 15 -- Prize winning journalist and WFMZ Channel 69 News broadcaster, Karin Mallett, will present her documentary “Convoy of Hope.”  As a reporter she will share her story of the Berks County effort to aid Katrina victims.  Location: Bernardine Lecture Hall at 10:00 a.m.
  • October 16 -- Cancelled due to family emergency.
  • October 17 -- Mary Barbera, author of The Verbal Behavior Approach:  Teaching Children with Autism and Other Related Disorders, will speak at 1:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. in the Bernardine Lecture Hall.  Her discussion will highlight her journey as a mother, nurse, and advocate for her autistic son. As an Alvernia Ph.D. candidate and researcher, she presents groundbreaking issues and techniques in the world of autism and related disorders.  [Both events will include a reception and book signing.]
  • October 18 -- Dr. Lee McClain, Associate Professor of English at Seton Hill College, will present a workshop entitled, “The Whole-Brain Approach to Crafting the Popular Novel.”  As the Director of the Master of Arts Program in Creative Writing and author of novels, short stories, essays, etc., McClain will focus on techniques used to access both sides of the brain.  Location: Bernardine Lecture Hall at 12:30 p.m.
  • October 19 – (Alvernia Homecoming Weekend) Dr. Robert Viscusi, Professor of English at CUNY-Brooklyn and author of the novel, Astoria (American Book Award 1996), will discuss his work in the area of Italian American Literature.     He is the executive officer of the Wolfe Institute for the Humanities at Brooklyn College and President of the Italian American Writers Association.  Sopranos fans are encouraged to attend!  Location: Student Center, 2nd Floor Seminar Rooms at 1:00 p.m.
  • October 20 -- Thinking about writing children's books? Come at 11:00 a.m. for Rhonda Gowler Greene's educational discussion about being a children’s author, getting published and much more. At 1:00 p.m., listen to a few of Rhonda’s wonderful books as she reads them. A book signing will follow.   • October 22 -- Radio personality, travel writer, author, media consultant, ghost tour lecturer, producer, playwright, Charlie Adams III, will present “Ghosts and Poe.” This special guest appearance by the Chair of the Greater Reading Reads Literary Festival will shock and delight the audience as Adams shares his interest in Edgar Allen Poe.  -Sure to be standing room only!  Location: Bernardine Lecture Hall at 12:00 noon.
  • October 23 – CSI fans, come for an evening with Dr. Henry Lee.  Internationally recognized expert in forensic science, author of numerous books, criminal investigator, DNA researcher, Lee will present a discussion entitled “Lessons Learned from High Profile Cases.”  His talk will focus on some of the Legendary Crimes of the Century:  OJ Simpson, Jon Benet Ramsey, Laci Peterson, Elizabeth Smart, Martha Moxley, Sam Shepard, JFK, etc.  Join Alvernia College in a salute to an outstanding scholar and humanitarian at 6:30 p.m. in the Physical Education Center.  [Event includes a reception and book signing.]
  • October 24 -- Dr. Richard Law, Professor of English at Alvernia, will host the first Annual Literary Festival College Poetry Contest.  All applicants must be enrolled at one of the five colleges in Berks County.  Students will be invited to read their writings at 1:00 p.m. in the Franco Library Bonaventure Reading Room.  Awards will be announced, followed by a reception.
  • October 25 -- Join Dr. David Silbey, Associate Professor of European History at Alvernia, in a discussion of his book, A War of Empire and Frontier: The Philippine-American War, 1899-1902.  Silbey recently appeared on a CSPAN-2 program in which he discussed his scholarly research and interest in writing historical nonfiction.  Location:  Bernardine Lecture Hall at 1:00 p.m.
  • October 26 – The Alvernia College Writers’ Series presents live readings in the Franco Library Bonaventure Reading Room at 1:00 p.m.  Join Dr. Tom Bierowski as he hosts a special showing of the group’s monthly gathering in which faculty, students, staff, and community members share their works.
  • October 29 -- New York Times sports writer and author, David Caldwell, will conduct a writing workshop at 1:00 p.m. in Bernardine Hall. As a correspondent for The Times, he covers all areas of sporting events and is most interested in stock car racing.  His first novel, Speed Show, is an inside look at one of America’s favorite past times.
  • October 30 -- GO GREEN! Join Dr. Carrie Fitzpatrick, Communications, and Dr. Spence Stober, Biology, as they present a slide show perspective entitled, “Sustainable Communities,” at 1:00 p.m. in the Bernardine Lecture Hall.  Their research and media presentation was recently shared at conferences in Vietnam, India and England.
