Library Databases

For general information searches, start your search with the Multiple Topics & Disciplines (EBSCO) database. This database, Academic Search Premier, provides full text coverage to over 4600 publications covering a broad array of subjects.Although smaller than Academic Search Premier, the JSTOR databases also cover multiple subjects and are full text.

For subject specific searches, begin your search in one of the subject databases. The EBSCO business, education, health, psychology and religion databases simultaneously search several databases, including Academic Search Premier.

For more advanced searching options, such as using a subject thesaurus, limit your search to one database rather than searching multiple databases simultaneously. You can select EBSCO databases by choosing the EBSCO Database Selection in the list of databases, or clicking the Choose Database tab when you are searching an EBSCO database.

EBSCO's Business searches three databases, Business Source Premier, Regional Business News ™ and the multidisciplinary Academic Search ™ Premier.

Business Source ® Premier
This is the world's definitive scholarly business database, providing indexing and abstracts for more than twice as many active, peer-reviewed, business related journals as any other database. Business Source ® Premier offers indexing and abstracts for the 350 most important scholarly journals back to 1965 or the first published issue. This database includes searchable cited references for more than 1,160 journals. Journal ranking studies reveal that Business Source ® Premieris the overwhelmingly superior database for full text journals in all disciplines of business, including marketing, management, MIS, POM, accounting, finance, econometrics and economics.

Regional Business News ™ is a supplemental database for customers of Business Source ® Premier. With daily updates, Regional Business News ™ provides comprehensive full text for regional business publications (including titles from Crain Communications). Regional Business News ™ has full text for more than 50 sources.

Communication & Mass Media Complete™
Communication & Mass Media Complete™
incorporates the content of CommSearch (formerly produced by the National Communication Association) and Mass Media Articles Index (formerly produced by Penn State) along with numerous other journals in communication, mass media, and other closely-related fields of study.

CMMC offers cover-to-cover ("core") indexing and abstracts for more than 570 journals, and selected ("priority") coverage of nearly 200 more, for a combined coverage of more than 770 titles. Furthermore, this database includes full text for over 450 journals.

In addition, CMMC features over 5,400 Author Profiles, providing biographical data and bibliographic information, and covering the most prolific, most cited, and most frequently searched for authors in the database

 

Controverisal Issues - Opposing Viewpoints

Criminal Justice Abstracts with Full Text™  (full text coming soon!)

Criminal Justice Abstracts with Full Text™ is the full-text counterpart of Criminal Justice Abstracts™, formerly a SAGE database. This resource includes bibliographic records and full text covering essential areas related to criminal justice and criminology. The increasing globalization of criminology is reflected in Criminal Justice Abstracts with Full Text’s coverage of hundreds of journals from around the world.

Dissertation & Theses - ProQuest* Search Tips
This database includes doctoral dissertations and master's theses from over 1,000 graduate schools and universities in North America and from around the globe.

Citations for dissertations published from 1980 forward also include 350-word abstracts written by the author. Citations for master's theses from 1988 forward include 150-word abstracts. Alvernia University has full text access to the humanities and social sciences database of dissertations in digital format starting with titles published from 1997 forward.

Dissertations and Theses - WorldCat*
Updated daily, this database contains records for all dissertations and theses, and published materials based on theses, cataloged by libraries in WorldCat. The database contains records for over 5 million dissertations, theses, and published materials based on all subjects cataloged by libraries in WorldCat.

Education & ERIC
EBSCO's Education searches four databases, Education Research Complete™, ERIC ®, the multidisciplinary Academic Search ™ Premier and EBSCOhost eBooks.

  • Education Research Complete ™ offers the world's largest and most complete collection of full text education journals. Topics covered include all levels of education from early childhood to higher education, and all educational specialties, such as multilingual education, health education, and testing. Education Research Complete also covers areas of curriculum instruction as well as administration, policy, funding, and related social issues. The database provides indexing and abstracts for more than 1,780 journals, as well as full text for more than 870 journals.   • ERIC ®
    ERIC ®, the Educational Resource Information Center, provides access to education literature and resources. The database provides access to information from journals included in the Current Index of Journals in Education and Resources in Education Index . ERIC provides full text of more than 2,200 digests along with references for additional information and citations and abstracts from over 1,000 educational and education-related journals. This database provides access to full text for 792 journals indexed in ERIC .

    The Department of Education ERIC site can be accessed directly at http://www.eric.ed.gov/ The content is the same as in EBSCO ERIC. The only difference is the interface.

GreenFILE offers well-researched information covering all aspects of human impact to the environment. Its collection of scholarly, government and general-interest titles includes content on global warming, green building, pollution, sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, recycling, and more. The database provides indexing and abstracts for approximately 295,000 records, as well as Open Access full text for more than 4,600 records.

Health, SportDISCUS & CINAHL
EBSCO's Health searches four databases, CINAHL ®, Health Source ®: Nursing/Academic Edition, SPORTDiscus, and the multidisciplinary Academic Search ™ Premier.

  •  CINAHL® with Full Text
    CINAHL® with Full Text indexes 2,931 nursing & allied health journals, with full text for 580 of the journals, dating back to 1981. The database covers nursing, biomedicine, alternative/complementary medicine, consumer health and 17 allied health disciplines. This database also offers access to health care books, nursing dissertations, selected conference proceedings, standards of practice, educational software, audiovisuals and book chapters.     The EBSCO host version of CINAHL includes PreCINAHL ™ as a companion database for subscribers. PreCINAHL provides current awareness of new journal articles, and includes a rotating file of limited bibliographic information (no subject indexing) that is available to researchers only while these articles are being indexed. This enables users to gain access to article citations that otherwise would not be available. Once the bibliographic records are complete, they are added to the CINAHL database and removed from PreCINAHL.

History Reference Center features cover-to-cover full text for more than 750 historical encyclopedias and other non-fiction books, including award winning titles from many top publishers. The database also includes full text for nearly 60 leading history periodicals. Further, the database contains 58,000 historical documents; 43,000 biographies of historical figures; more than 12,000 historical photos and maps; and 87 hours of historical film and video.

Military & Government Collection is designed to offer current news pertaining to all branches of the military and government. The Military & Government Collection provides cover-to-cover full text for nearly 400 journals and periodicals and indexing and abstracts for more than 500 titles.

OT Seeker

OTSeeker is a database that contains abstracts of systematic reviews and randomised controlled trials relevant to occupational therapy. Trials have been critically appraised and rated to assist you to evaluate their validity and interpretability. (OTS)

OT Search

The American Occupational Therapy Association OT Search Database covers the literature of occupational therapy and related subject areas, such as rehabilitationeducation, psychiatry or psychology, and health care delivery or administration. Some of the records include an abstract of the article. (years of coverage vary from 3 to 15 years).

TIP: The full-text is not available for articles cited in OT Search. The full-text is available in the EBSCO Health databases and in the Alvernia Library collection of print journals for some articles cited in OT Search. Articles not available in these two sources can be obtained through interlibrary loan.

EBSCO's Psychology searches two databases, PsycINFO ®, PsycARTICLES®, and the multidisciplinary Academic Search ™ Premier.

    PsycINFO ®, from the American Psychological Association (APA), contains more than 2 million citations and summaries of scholarly journal articles, book chapters, books, and dissertations, all in psychology and related disciplines, dating as far back as the 1800s. 97 percent of the covered material is peer-reviewed. The database also includes information about the psychological aspects of related fields such as medicine, psychiatry, nursing, sociology, education, pharmacology, physiology, linguistics, anthropology, business, law and others. Journal coverage, which spans 1887 to present, includes international material selected from nearly 2,000 periodicals in more than 25 languages.     ATLA Religion Database ™ provides information on topics such as biblical studies, world religions, church history, and religion in social issues. This database is the definitive index for religious and theological literature.  ATLA Religion Database contains more than 1.3 million bibliographic records covering the research literature of religion in over 60 languages. It includes more than 460,000 article citations from more than 1,500 journals (651 currently indexed), more than 260,000 essay citations from over 15,400 multi-author works, more than 423,000 book review citations, and a growing number of multimedia citations. Most coverage spans from 1949 to the present, while an ambitious retrospective indexing project provides citations of select titles back to their original publication date. We are not able to provide off campus access for this database.

A database that includes biographic details on approximately 100,000 modern novelists, poets, playwrights, nonfiction writers, journalists and scriptwriters. Arts & Sciences I

The Arts & Sciences I Collection includes the complete back runs of 117 titles in fifteen disciplines. Established in 1997, it is JSTOR's first collection and includes many of the core research and society published journals in economics, history, political science, and sociology, as well as in other key fields in the humanities and social sciences. This collection also includes a selection of titles in the more science-oriented fields of ecology, mathematics, and statistics.

OT Search
The American Occupational Therapy Association OT Search Database covers the literature of occupational therapy and related subject areas, such as rehabilitation, education, psychiatry or psychology, and health care delivery or administration. Some of the records include an abstract of the article. (years of coverage vary from 3 to 15 years)

Philosopher's Index
Philosopher's Index provides indexing and abstracts from books and journals of philosophy. (1940- present, updated quarterly)

In addition to primary legal information consisting of case law, and state and federal statutes, this resource provides summaries and analysis of court decisions, law reviews, and synopsis of legal issues.

Ulrich’s Periodicals Directory™ is a bibliographic database providing detailed, comprehensive, and authoritative information on serials published throughout the world. It covers all subjects, and includes publications that are published regularly or irregularly and are circulated free of charge or by paid subscription.

wired.MD streaMed Patient Education Solution
Through this database, you will have access to consumer health and patient education videos that are developed by leading physicians and educators throughout the country. These videos present important information regarding the most common health conditions, diagnoses, procedures, and treatments you may encounter.

In order to view these videos, you need only select a topic and choose the appropriate video player and bandwidth based on your computer and Internet settings. A click of the mouse opens a 5-10 minute video that you can then review. Depending on the display format you choose, you may be able to pause, rewind and replay sections or the entire video.

NetLibrary eBooks
A collection of over 15,000 eBooks is now accessible from NetLibrary. eBooks are full text electronic versions that can be borrowed and returned over the Internet.
