Transcultural Nursing Resources

Develop a Search Strategy

  • Define your topic in the form of a question.

Example: What cultural customs are associated with prenatal care for Muslim women?

  • List common synonyms for each concept.
  • Truncate where appropriate.
Concept 1
Concept 2
Concept 3

cultur*

prenatal care
islam*

social life

antenatal care
muslim*

custom*

pregnancy care

religio*

maternal health
  • Use Boolean search power to connect search terms:
    1. Combine synonyms using Boolean "OR" to broaden focus.
    2. Combine concepts using Boolean "AND" to narrow focus.

Example:

(cultur* OR social life OR custom* OR religio*) AND
(prenatal care OR antenatal care OR pregnancy care OR maternal health) AND
(islam* OR muslim*)

You may find it helpful to substitute the name of countries associated with the ethnic group of interest.
For example: Iran, Jordan, Afghanistan

Finding Books

Useful subject terms for finding books on transcultural nursing include:

  • health behavior
  • health research
  • transcultural nursing
  • transcultural medical care
  • case studies
  • cross cultural studies
  • cultural characteristics
  • ethnic groups
  • intercultural communication
  • multiculturism

In general, a keyword search for terms related to a specific ethnic group will be most useful when searching for books. Discussions related to specific ethnic groups are often a small part of a book. You may need to check the index of books to find information about specific ethnic groups.

Awareness of cultural differences is critical for people working in international business. Books on business etiquette often include helpful information about intercultural communication.

Finding Journal Articles

Subject terms in the CINAHL and the National Library of Medicine that are useful to include:

  • transcultural nursing
  • cross cultural care
  • cultural diversity
  • cultural sensitivity
  • cultural values
  • attitude-to-health
  • health-behavior
  • health-beliefs
  • ethnological research

Combine these terms with appropriate terms for the ethnic group you are interested in.

In addition to the Health databases, the Psychology and Sociology databases may have useful information relating transcultural issues to health care. Since they are not health databases the search should include a phrase such as “health care” or “health beliefs” or “nursing” as one concept. Include search terms for a cultural, religious or ethnic group as a second concept..
