Titles of Works in Paper

 

Capitalization

  • Always capitalize the first word, last word, and all principal
    words in a title.
  • Do NOT capitalize the following words when they are
    located in the middle of a title:
Articles:
a, an, the
Prepositions:
against, between, in, of, to
Coordinating Conjunctions:
and, but, for, nor, or, so yet
Infinitives:
to

Underlining Titles

 

  • Underline titles of works that have been published
    independently (not as part of a larger work): books, plays,
    pamphlets, periodicals, films, radio and television
    programs, compact discs, ballets, operas, paintings,
    sculptures, ships, aircrafts, etc.

 

Titles in Quotation Marks

 

  • Titles of works published within larger works are placed in
    quotation marks. Examples include articles, essays, short
    stories and poems, chapter in book, songs, etc.
  • Unpublished works (speeches, lectures) are also set in
    quotation marcks.
