GUIDELINES FOR UNBIASED LANGUAGE:

Guidelines have been developed by the APA (See Publication Manual, pp. 61-76) to avoid biased assumptions about people in their writing. Below are a few examples of how to eliminate this bias. For more information on this topic, however, please refer to the APA Publication Manual.

EXAMPLE:

Avoid Gender Bias:
Not as Good: The student is usually the best judge of the quality of the course he has taken.
Better: Students are usually the best judges of the quality of the courses they have taken.

EXAMPLE:

Recognize Participation:
Not as Good: Half of the subjects were randomly placed in the control group.
Better: Half of the participants were randomly placed in the control group.

EXAMPLE:

Specify the Name of the Ethnic Group:
Not as Good: The participants included 50 Asian Americans.
Better: The participants included 30 Chinese Americans and 20 Vietnamese Americans

EXAMPLE:

Place Person Before Their Disability:
Not as Good: The stroke of the victim had trouble verbalizing his thoughts.
Better: The individual who had a stroke had trouble verbalizing his thoughts.
