CAPITALIZATION:


Within the body of the paper, capitalize only the main words in titles and headings:

  • Capitalize verbs, nouns, adjectives, adverbs, and pronouns.

  • Do NOT capitalize conjunctions, articles, and short prepositions; however, do capitalize all words that are four letters or more.

  • Capitalize a hyphenated compound (eg., Long-Term).

  • Capitalize the first word after a colon or a dash.

On the reference page, follow the reference list guidelines:

  • Capitalize only the first word, the first word after a colon or a dash, and proper nouns of books and articles.

  • For more information on capitalization, please refer to pp. 94-100 of the APA Publication Manual, 5th edition.

 

 

SPACING:


Use one space after all punctuation. This includes:

  • commas, colons, semicolons

  • punctuation at the end of a sentence

  • periods that separate parts of a reference citation

  • periods after the initials of a person’s name (S. R. Mansfield)

    Do NOT include a space after periods in abbreviations (e.g., U.S., p.m.).
