THE HONORS PROGRAM AT ALVERNIA COLLEGE

Excellence, Interaction, Enthusiasm

Computer Information Systems Course Offerings

Alvernia Internet Radio
A “soup-to-nut” examination of all facets involved with establishing a radio presence over the Internet. Topics will include an examination of current Internet Radio providers, comparison of architecture alternatives (including formats for data communications, physical media for connecting to listeners, computer hardware and software, etc.), and exploration of evolving legal and economic considerations. Course content will include hands-on hardware configuration (and experimentation!) so students gain a first hand appreciation for the challenges associated with the new and exciting technological and societal innovation.

 Mind, Brains, and Computers
Do zebras wear pajamas when they sleep? Computers can calculate pi to a million decimal places easily, keep track of a company’s payroll, provide diagnosis of cancer patients and play chess. But are they really smart? Can they answer ‘do zebras wear pajamas when they sleep’? What is the difference between digital computers and human minds? This course assesses the research program called cognitive science where human mind is understood as a complex computational system. We will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of cognitive science—are we really computers?!
