Giant Food Gives Student Fresh Perspective

A recent Gallop Poll makes it clear - it’s not where you go to college that counts most, it is how you do it. Engagement on campus in clubs, leadership roles, internships and community service make the biggest difference when preparing students for happy and successful lives. And when it comes to student engagement, Kyle Covington ‘16 stands out!

A double major in accounting and business management with dean’s list honors, Covington is a member of the Institute for Management Accountants, the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), Delta Mu Delta and Phi Beta Lambda where he currently serves as the club’s president. He was also one of the first Alvernia participants in an academic and cultural program that aimed to encourage Chinese students to come study in the U.S

In addition to his extra curricular activities on campus, he has been gaining real-world experience from the area’s leading grocery store, working his way through various operations and leadership roles where he was able to interact with customers, associates and management gaining valuable insight about the retail business.

“Whether in a store environment, distribution center or corporate office, my internship with Giant Food Stores, solidified my interest in operations management,” Covington explained. “Being able to witness the technological advances that the company was undertaking was the highlight of my internship.”

A role model for embracing Alvernia’s do well and do good philosophy, Covington spends his free time as a volunteer at Berks Encore where he assists low income families in the community with tax preparation and at the American Red Cross where he helps victims cope with loss for the Southern Chester County chapter.
