ALVERNIA STUDENT EMPLOYMENT FAIR

Welcome to the Alvernia College Student Employment Program

Alvernia has many opportunities for students to work on or off campus.  There are two types of student employment available at Alvernia – Federal Work Study and Institutional Work Study.

Federal Work Study is a federal government program whereby schools apply for, and are allocated federal funds to be spent each academic year in the form of FWS financial aid awards. These awards are given to eligible students who demonstrate financial need.   Financial need is determined using a standard formula to evaluate the financial information reported on the students’ FAFSA.  Students earn these awards by working part-time on or off campus and earning a paycheck which can be used to pay for educational or living expenses.  Employment for Federal Work-Study is available as funding allows.

Institutional work study is not based on financial need and is funded entirely by Alvernia.  Funds for institutional work study are limited to certain departments based upon specific needs and job skills.  Students employed in institutional jobs on campus are allowed to earn up to $2,900 per academic year.  Employment for institutional work study is available as funding allows.

The student employment process is as follows:

1. Refer to your Financial Aid Award letter to determine if you are eligible for Federal Work Study.   If you do not qualify for Federal Work-Study, please inquire about institutional work study employment opportunities at Alvernia by calling the Office of Financial Aid at 610-796-8356 or Lisa Venkler, Student Employment Coordinator, at 610-796-5509 or by checking the Alvernia College Website

2. Check the Alvernia College Website to find a list of job opportunities available on and off campus.

3. Fill out a Student Employment Information Packet with Lisa Venkler in Francis Hall Room 307 or with the Financial Aid Office in Bernardine Hall Room 1103.  The Student Employment Information Packet consists of:

               Student Information (i.e., name, Social Security Number,
               Home Address, Housing status, Home Phone, Cell Phone
)

                Student Employment Rights and Responsibilities

               Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act(FERPA)

               Federal Form I-9 (must bring with you two forms of ID:  Social Security Card and Drivers License or State ID card or School ID with photograph or U.S. Passport)

               Federal W-4 Form(Employee’s Withholding Allowance Certificate)

               Local Services Tax Exemption Certificate– in order for a student to be exempt from this $2.00 tax per pay, the student needs to prove that he or she will not be making for than $12,000 within the tax year.  Student who earn less than $12,000 per tax year need to bring along copies of their last pay statements or copies of prior tax year W-2s.  Students who do not bring along the required forms or students who earn more than $12,000 per tax year will have the $2.00 per pay deducted from their paycheck.  Please call Alvernia’ Payroll office with any questions.

               Direct Deposit Form– all students are strongly encouraged to have their pay directly deposited into their checking account (bring along a voided check) or savings account.

4. The student will then take the completed paperwork to the department supervisor of the job they are applying for and the supervisor will fill out Step 3 of the Student Employment Authorization Form and send the completed form back to Lisa Venkler in Franc is Hall Room 307.   (STUDENTS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO BEGIN WORK UNTIL ALL THE NECESSARY PAPERWORK HAS BEEN COMPLETED)
