At Alvernia, our students do well and do good at the same time. It is part of our values-based learning philosophy that is engrained in our heritage as a distinctive Franciscan university. We emphasize the education of the whole person and encourage students to discover a sense of self and a strong work ethic to fully develop their unique gifts.
Service to others is at the heart of our educational mission and all students participate in volunteer service as part of their time on campus. The university helps students find opportunities to fit their interests, schedules, and talents through our Campus Ministry.
Not surprisingly, service learning and volunteer opportunities abound including international service trips to locations like the Dominican Republic and Ecuador, as well as locations across the United States including New Orleans and West Virginia. Many service leaning options are also available on or near campus including working at food banks, running mentoring programs, working to improve the environment and promoting social justice, among others.
Community service is an integral part of each student’s learning experience, contributing to their intellectual, social, and spiritual growth and development while providing a framework for students’ roles as members of local, regional and global communities.
