Web Developer

Job Summary:
The Web Developer plans, designs, programs, builds, develops, and maintains Alvernia University’s web-based communication platforms in support of the institution’s overall marketing and communications goals. The Web Developer manages website technical support for academic and administrative areas to encourage and allow regular content updates to college and department web pages and technical applications, including programming, to ensure effective and efficient operations. The Web Developer coordinates, trains and determines levels of access for web content editors. The Web Developer manages website information currency consistent with University standards and information needs.

Essential Functions:
  • Plan, design, program, build, develop, and test the Alvernia University web
  • Manage the University Web site for currency of information and function, providing assistance, training, and direction to all University offices responsible for website content
  • Coordinate, train and determine levels of access for web content editors to ensure currency of information on University web pages
  • Analyze and improve University websites for compatibility, organization, efficiency, performance and usability. Update information contained on the websites or in databases linked to the sites and check website links for operability, currency, and compatibility with core browsers and protocols
  • Ensure proper functionality and compliance of all University websites industry standards including RSS, W3C, and Section 508 accessibility standards
  • Perform regular search engine optimization on key web pages to support external communication goals
  • Troubleshoot problem and outages, scheduling upgrades and collaborating with IT teams in planning and implementing changes
  • Develop website content to address institutional marketing and communications needs
  • Master and coordinate research, testing and implementation of new and emerging web-based technologies, including formatting web pages for mobile devices and interfacing website content with technologies such as Web 2.0 and Web 3.0 or other web-based communication platforms
  • Promote Franciscan ideals and adherence to the Mission of the University.

Additional Responsibilities:
  • Monitor the University website for security efficiency, taking into account issues of legality, confidentiality, and relevancy of information access
  • Use analytical and statistical tools to monitor and to optimize University website performance
  • Assist in coordination of University web projects and provide guidance
  • Assist with web graphic design and web development of dynamic forms, streaming video, digital newsletters and other web-based digital content delivery methods
  • Design, develop, and implement University website mobile solutions for mobile devices including iPhone, iPad, iOS, and Android, to address institutional marketing and communications needs
  • Provide web technical expertise and training to the University staff and faculty
  • Assist with web-based promotional and marketing techniques.
  • Engage in ongoing research of emerging trends and new technologies which may benefit the University’s goal of strategically implementing technology to enhance business performance and the support services function
  • In collaboration with the Information Technology (IT) department, assist in the deployment, trouble-shooting and maintenance of other University web-based information systems.

  • Commitment to the mission statement, core values and goals of Alvernia University.
  • Minimum four-year college degree and five to seven years’ experience in a technically similar environment. Education or certification relevant to job skills and demands.
  • Working knowledge of graphic editing programs such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, DreamWeaver
  • Knowledge of portal technologies such as Microsoft SharePoint
  • Knowledge of web content management systems, including Cascades, Drupal and WordPress
  • Working knowledge of programing and script languages such as HTML, DHTML, CSS, PHP, Java Script, VB Script, XML, Flash Action Script
  • Working knowledge of FTP (File Transfer Protocol), SSH, Telnet and Unix command line language
  • Working knowledge of workstation and server operating systems, backup systems and LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP)
  • Working knowledge of database systems such as SQL, MySQL, Access, and Oracle, including their structures, maintenance, and connectivity with various web technologies
  • Working knowledge of industry standard web browsers
  • Familiarity with programming languages such as .NET, Visual Basic, C++, C#, ASP, Cocoa, Java, AJAX, Perl, Ruby, strongly desired
  • Experience in mobile device application programming and web development
  • Attention to detail, ability to compartmentalize complex tasks and to trouble-shoot emerging problems
  • Ability to quickly master new and complex information technology systems
  • Ability to demonstrate continuous improvement
  • Excellent written and personal communication skills, documentation practices, and the ability to teach others how to accomplish simple and complex tasks related to website operations
  • Project management skills and multi-tasking abilities.

Physical and Other Requirements:
  • This is a 24/7 on-call position and may be subject to varying and unpredictable situations and extended, non-standard work hours for special projects.
  • Must be able to work from home online if necessary.
