“The Shadow”, by Yevgeni Shvarts, is a comic fairy-tale for grown-ups in the same vein as “The Princess Bride.” Based on a Hans Christian Andersen story, the play is the tale of a Scholar who comes to a far off land to study their history. It turns out to be a place where fairy tales happen. In romancing the Princess in disguise across the street from his room at the inn, the Scholar asks his Shadow to help him. Being obedient, the Shadow tears away from the Scholar. The Shadow romances the Princess while swiftly working his way up the political ladder. “The Shadow” is a comedy that looks satirically at leaders, followers, ethics, and also works as a piece of Christian allegory. All that and the funny too.
