What is it?Dual credit is a program whereby a high school student enrolls in a class taught at the high school for college credit. Any high school course offered for dual credit will have been approved by the appropriate academic department at Alvernia College as being comparable to the same course given on the Alvernia campus. Dual credit differs from Advanced Placement in that the student does not take a national qualifying exam to receive the credit. Who takes it?Generally, the student is a junior or senior who has completed most if not all of his or her academic requirements for high school graduation. What value is it?Dual credit is growing increasingly popular. More and more freshmen are entering their institutions with college credits already on their transcripts. This means that, depending on the institution, these students may be able to get a head start on credits required for graduation and possibly even eliminate some basic courses. How much does it cost?Because Alvernia College is primarily interested in offering a service to area high schools and creating closer ties with them, the cost to the student is less than 30% of the standard tuition, regardless of whether the course is for 3 or 4 credits. There are no other college fees, although students are responsible for textbooks. In addition, for every 20 enrollments, Alvernia will grant the high school one free enrollment to use however it wishes. How do students register?Once courses have been approved, the high school will collect and send the fees to the Registrar at Alvernia College, along with the following information for each course:
Once the fees and information have been received, each student will be registered for the Alvernia course. He or she will receive an Alvernia ID card and, at the end of the term, a grade report, based on the Alvernia grading system. The student may request that a transcript be sent to the college of his or her choice. The first transcript will be sent free of charge; subsequent transcripts may be sent for a small fee. What if the college the student attends does not accept the credits? If the college or university which the student first attends does not accept these credits, Alvernia College will refund the cost of the course. What types of courses are offered?
