AmeriCorps PACC*VISTA Member Opportunity (2008-09)

Position:  PACC-VISTA Member – Center for Community Engagement (Full-Time)

Description:
The Center for Community Engagement VISTA Member is a position to support the South Reading Youth Initiative, an education and mentoring after-school program for middle-school children from the South Reading community.  The VISTA member selected for this project would function with their primary responsibilities related to the South Reading Youth Initiative but could also serve as a liaison to Campus Ministry for engaging students in service.  The VISTA Member is a position with student supervisory responsibilities. 

Compensation for the VISTA member will be funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) in conjunction with existing grant monies available through the South Reading Youth Initiative.  Compensation includes benefits provided by CNCS.  This position is a one year appointment with the possibility of renewal.  This position is considered to be a year of service with compensation in the form of a service stipend, limited health benefits, and the option of an educational award upon completion of service.

Summary of Duties:

  1. Assist in the recruitment, training, and supervision of College students to support the South Reading Youth Initiative/Youth Center
  2. Assist in the recruitment of students from our community who would benefit from activities/services related to the South Reading Youth Initiative/Youth Center
  3. Visit off-site locations in the Greater Reading Community for meetings with community leaders/partners
  4. Assist in the development and implementation of a comprehensive programming plan for the South Reading Youth Initiative/Youth Center including outcomes assessment data and feasibility studies

Position Requirements:

  1. Bachelor’s Degree required
  2. Driver’s license
  3. Excellent communication skills
  4. Strong interpersonal skills
  5. Proven PC skills
  6. Strong belief in the value of higher education and service learning
  7. Self-motivated with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  8. Must be available to work evenings and weekends for this after-school program
  9. Ideal candidates should have experience working with diverse populations and be bi-lingual (Spanish)
