Choosing
a college major can be a difficult task. This may explain why
over 50% of college students change their major at least once
after starting college. By design, college offers exposure to
new disciplines and a deeper exploration of subjects introduced
in high school. This additional information can cause even the
most directed student to reconsider an initial choice.
To further complicate the landscape, there is often
no particularly clear connection between a major or subject and
the resulting expertise or potential employment. Or there may
be no clear direction offered from a profession or industry as
to the best course of study to pursue in preparation.
Added to this mix are the dynamics of changing
employment projections, personal preferences, and individual
aptitudes, interests and experiences. Little wonder that the
question is a source of family conflict and individual malaise.
The sections that follow describe each of the majors
at Alvernia College and lists skills and values associated with
that major. Additionally, leisure activities and other strategies
for success are suggested. To gain "real life" experience,
internship sites and community service opportunities are also
included. Finally, job titles, professional organizations and
web sites are offered to complete the picture.
Undecided students may also find some self-assessment
activities helpful in formulating a career path. An on-line version
of FOCUS,
a career and educational planning system, is available to Alvernia
students. You may contact Career Services for the password or
find it on campus publicity posted in all classrooms, residence
halls and other public areas. Other assessment opportunities
are also available.
Having reviewed the sections of interest, students
are urged to contact the Career Services staff (610-796-8225)
to schedule an appointment for further guidance, assistance and
information.
