STEPS TO CHOOSING A MAJOR

1. Talk to your advisor. This is always your first step to any major academic decision. Share with him or her your thoughts, concerns, and any issues you have surrounding this important decision.

2. Learn about yourself. Spend some time identifying your interests and values, your skills, and life goals. The major you eventually chose and the career you decide to pursue will ideally grow from what interests you and what you value.

3. Be open. It’s hard to make an important decision unless you expand your thinking and your options. Use the Liberal Arts Core to take classes in areas that you have not had an opportunity to explore or that you think may interest you.

4. Conduct research. One of the most important steps in deciding on a major is to know what majors are offered at Alvernia and what careers they prepare you for. There are plenty of websites and books available that can help you. You can begin by looking at the information available in the Majors and Careers section of this site.

5. Take COL 190: Majors and Careers. This course will guide you through the process of selecting a major by giving you the opportunity to learn about yourself and research careers that you might pursue and the majors that relate to them.

6. Volunteer. Volunteering is a great way to learn about yourself and what interests you.

7. Join clubs or student organizations. Getting involved on campus and developing relationships with other students can help you clarify your interests.
