FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How can Genesis help me decide on a major that’s really right for me?

The program really consists of a network of resources that students can use as they decide on a major. These include faculty advising, interest, values, and aptitude assessment, information on all majors and minors at Alvernia, Majors Rush and other programs, and COL 190: Majors and Careers.

When do I need to make a decision about my major?

At Alvernia you are required to declare a major by the time you complete 45 credit hours. Typically, this will occur when you complete your third semester. This gives students three semesters to identify their interests, learn how majors relate to careers, and explore the curriculum. However, students are encouraged to declare their major as soon as they decide so that they can begin taking courses in their major. While you have time to explore, it is best to speak with an advisor at least once a semester to help you decide by the end of your freshmen year.

I don’t know what I want to major in.
Will I be able to graduate in four years?

Depending in what major you finally choose and when, you may be able to graduate in four years. Most students take general education and core curriculum courses in their first year, so unless you decide on a major that requires major courses in a specific sequence (i.e year-by- year), it is likely you can graduate in four years (if you remain in good academic standing.) Obviously, the longer you explore the more likely it is you will need additional semesters to complete your degree. Your academic advisor will help you select the right courses for you.

How can I find out which careers are related to which majors?

You need to do some research. There are lots of books and web based resources to help you match majors with careers. As a general rule, unless you decide to pursue a career in a field such as nursing or occupational therapy that requires licensing or technical knowledge/skills, many majors can prepare you for a single career.

What courses should I take while I’m deciding on a major?

Since all Alvernia students have to complete the Core Curriculum in order to graduate, you should take courses that fulfill this requirement. These courses allow you to explore a wide range of issues and topics and that will help you explore and define your interests – an important part of deciding on a major. You can also take COL 190: Majors and Careers, a course designed for students who are in the process of choosing a major.

Should I take COL 190: Majors and Careers?

COL 190: Majors and Careers is designed specifically for students who are in the process of deciding on a major and who think they would benefit from sustained and guided on the major selection process. Students will learn methods of ongoing self-evaluation, explore decision-making theory, learn how to locate, evaluate, and use information on majors and careers, and learn how to connect majors to career. Students will identify and evaluate interests, skills, values and life style preferences and relate them to educational and career planning. Students who are committed to their choice of major should not take this course.
