CONSIDERING CHANGING YOUR MAJOR?

Many students will change their major before they graduate. In fact, national estimates tell us that between 50% and 75 % of students who enter college with a major in mind will change their mind before they graduate.  And many students will change their major more than once. Why? One reason is that college exposes students to ideas and new people that help them discover new interests; it makes sense that students will change their majors as their interests expand. Another reason is that people change and develop as they learn and experience new things. It also makes sense that new interests, values, and goals would emerge as people’s experience broadens.

When is it time to consider changing your major?

You are not doing well in required or foundational courses in the major you have chosen.

You are bored or feel unmotivated.

Your realize that your current choice of major is someone else’s dream or plan, not yours.

You have become much more interested in other subjects and areas than you are in your major

You are staying in your current major only because you think you have to in order to get a good job after graduation.

Major Changing "Musts"

Talk to your advisor. Share with him or her your thoughts about your current choice of major and learn what your other options are.

Learn the requirements for the major you are thinking of changing to and consider if changing your major will require you to complete additional semesters of college.

Research the careers that are associated with the major you are considering.

If you know you no longer want to major in what you’ve chosen but aren’t sure what your new major will be, consider taking COL 190: Majors and Careers. The course is designed specifically for students who are in the process of deciding on a major.

If you decide you do want to change your major you will need to complete a “Change of Major” form, have it signed by, and return it to the Registrar’s Office. When the change is processed you will be assigned a faculty advisor in your new major.
