Welcome to Alvernia College!

Fall 2006 New Student Orientation

 

Thursday, August 24

8:00 a.m. - 12 noon



New Resident Students Check-in and Move-in
(Check-in in the Student Center)

Please stop in the Student Center to pick up your New Student Orientation Materials and your residence hall keys before proceeding to your assigned residence hall. OWLS are available to assist you in unloading your vehicle.
8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Services/Offices Available
  • Student Financial Planning (Bernardine Hall)
  • Public Safety - Student Identification Cards & Parking Permits (Student Center)
  • Student Billing Office (Francis Hall)
  • Registrar's Office (Francis Hall)
  • Computer Hook-Up (Student Center; After 1:30pm - 2nd Floor of Library)
  • Book Store (Student Center)
  • Residence Life (Veronica Hall)
8:00 - 11:00 a.m. Continental Breakfast (Dining Hall)
11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Parent's Session with Student Financial Planning (Bernardine Hall Lecture Hall)
Student Financial Planning professional staff members will discuss the various responsibilities that students have each year in order to maintain their financial aid package. Commuter parents, you will definitely want to come early to participate in this session.
11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

12:00 p.m. Daily Mass (Holy Savior Chapel, Veronica Hall)
Every weekday Alvernia offers the College community the opportunity to celebrate Catholic Mass.
12:00 - 1:30 p.m.



Commuter Student Check-in (Student Center)

Commuter Students check-in in the Student Center to receive your New Student Orientation materials.
1:00 - 1:45 p.m. Parent Meeting with Residence Life and Health and Wellness Staff (Bernardine Hall Lecture Hall)
Learn about the programs Alvernia has in place to aid your student in a successful residential college experience. Here is a perfect opportunity to have your individual questions answered.
2:00 - 2:45 p.m. Opening Session with the College President (Physical Education Center)
Join Dr. Thomas Flynn, his Executive Team, and Alvernia faculty and staff at the 2006 New Student Orientation Opening Session.
2:45 - 3:15 p.m. Great Expectations (Physical Education Center)
Samuel T. Frankhouser, Associate Dean of Students and Chief Judicial Officer, and Dolores Bertoti, Dean of Academic Advancement, present an information session where students and parents alike will hear about ways to successfully “navigate the waters” of the first year of college.
3:15 - 3:30 p.m. Students and Parents say Goodbye (Physical Education Center)
Our newest students will be heading off to their first official class of the semester. We encourage you to take this opportunity to say farewell. At the conclusion of the next sessions, parents will depart campus and students will attend either the Resident Student or Commuter Student Meeting.
3:30 - 4:30 p.m.



Introduction to First-Year Seminar (Assigned Classrooms)

Students, meet your First-Year Seminar professor and classmates in your first mandatory class meeting. Classrooms will be announced during the Opening Session. OWLs will lead First-Year Seminar students to their assigned classrooms.
Transfer Student Meeting
Transfer students will meet separately. OWLs will lead transfer students to their assigned meeting room.
Parent Meeting with Administration (Physical Education Center)
Members of the College’s Administrative team would like to take this opportunity to meet and speak directly with the parents. Parents, please do not leave this session with unanswered questions. At the end of this session we encourage all parents to depart campus.
4:30 - 5:30 p.m. Residence Student Meeting (Bernardine Hall Lecture Hall)
This is your opportunity to meet with the Residence Life staff and other students residing within your residence hall. Here you will learn all about living on campus.
Commuter Student Meeting and Bingo (Bernardine Hall Lounge)
Learn the “ins and outs” of being a Commuter, and win some great prizes while you are at it. Prizes to include: a gas card, free car washes, book store gift certificate, free oil change, and many more.
6:00 - 10:00 p.m.



New Student Orientation Opening Picnic & Carnival Celebration (Dining Hall and Resident Student Parking Lot A)
Join your student leaders for a picnic and carnival celebration. Dinner will be served in the Dining Hall from 6:00 p.m. through 7:30 p.m. The carnival activities will be available until 10:00 p.m. Relax with your new friends by the Tiki Bar (nonalcoholic drinks only) while the DJ spins some tunes and you take your turn at several fun events, volleyball, and t-shirt tye-dying. Bring along your white Orientation t-Shirt to tye-dye!!!
