“I struggled sometimes in high school, but Alvernia saw the potential in me and gave me the opportunity to go to college through a freshman foundations support program. Through my hard work and with the assistance of our faculty and staff, I have developed into an honor student in my field of social work.

I spent the summer before my senior year going over finances with my mom. Although I work three jobs on campus as a writing tutor, admissions tour guide, and peer mentor for student success, it didn’t look like I would have enough money to finish my education. Thanks to the generosity of the Class of 2013, I earned a scholarship through the Senior Class Gift portion of the Alvernia Fund.

It is a phenomenal feeling to know that my classmates have given me the opportunity to complete my education. Without this scholarship, I don’t think I would still be at Alvernia. I cannot wait to take part in this year’s Senior Class Gift to give the same opportunity to another student that my classmates gave to me. Thank you for allowing me to complete my education!”

“Coming to Alvernia changed my life. When I arrived, I really didn’t understand what “to learn, to love, to serve” meant until I started working on my service projects. These service projects showed me the value and importance of giving to others while helping me discover my passion for working with children. Since coming to Alvernia, I have volunteered for more than 300 hours of service as an Orientation Weekend Leader, a tutor for inner city students in South Reading, as well as working at YMCA and Alvernia Creativity Camps.

Entering my senior year, I faced significantly reducing my service work to find ways to complete my education. Thanks to the generosity of the Class of 2013, I earned a scholarship through the Senior Class Gift portion of the Alvernia Fund. It is a wonderful feeling to know that I am part of a campus community that takes care of its own. My scholarship allows me to finish my degree and continue my work with children to give them opportunities to fulfill their dreams of earning a college education someday.

When alumni give back to Alvernia, it gives opportunity to students. My hope is that all of our alumni would give back to the University. Your gift, when combined with the gifts of others, would provide more students with what the Class of 2013 gave to me—the opportunity to complete my own dream of graduating from Alvernia.”
