“Alvernia is a place where you can make your mark,” says Dr. Rachel Maher. And she has. After graduating from Alvernia where she majored in biology in 1994, Rachel went to the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, where her liberal arts education gave her the solid foundation she needed to excel.
Now a pediatric dentist with her own practice, Dentistry for Children, in Wilmington, Delaware, Rachel sees patients every day, in addition to teaching residents at nearby Wilmington Hospital. Her skills have not gone unnoticed: She was recently selected as Delaware’s Top Pediatric Dentist by her peers.
Fifteen years after graduating from Alvernia, she still remembers and lives the university’s motto—to learn, to love, to serve. “Alvernia’s mission is very important to all aspects of life,” she says. One of the ways she serves her community is through Give Kids a Smile, a national program that provides dental care to patients who can’t afford it and educates parents, health care providers, and daycare teachers on the importance of dental care.
