About Reading, Pennsylvania

Many first-time visitors are surprised to find Alvernia's peaceful, tree-lined grounds and modern campus buildings in Reading, Pennsylvania, a city of 81,000 (metro 250,000) once known for its national importance to the mining and railroad industries. We are nestled in the scenic Blue Mountains of Eastern Pennsylvania.

Downtown Reading, about three miles from campus, offers a mix of cultural and entertainment destinations such as the GoggleWorks Center for the Arts, the Reading Public Museum, outlet shopping, minor league sports, concerts and events at the Sovereign Center, and community involvement opportunities at the Hispanic Center, Reading public schools and more.

Beyond Reading lies Pennsylvania's famous Amish country. Alternatively, Alvernia is just a couple of hours by train or road trip to New York, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and Baltimore, with their museums, theatre, history, music venues, professional sports, and more. And when the weather warms up, the Atlantic beaches are invitingly accessible.

Learn more about the Reading area by visiting the Greater Reading Convention & Vistors Bureau website.

Inside Alvernia
While our core institutional values--service, humility, collegiality, contemplation, and peacemaking--extend from the faith of our Franciscan founders, they have a universal ethical appeal.
