Student Profile

Luis Colon has an important job. As test operations manager for Sechan Electronics, he’s responsible for quality control for a company that designs, builds, and tests the electrical components of equipment used by the military—tanks, planes, missile systems—equipment in which electrical failures can mean the difference between life and death.

So when Luis started looking for an education that would help him do his job better, he turned to Alvernia. “I’d heard a lot about it,” he says, “and people said it was a great school, so I thought I’d give it a shot.”

Luis is getting a bachelor’s degree in business administration in Alvernia University’s Continuing Studies program. As a 44-year-old man with a job, a wife, and two kids, he appreciates that the program is designed specifically to meet the needs of working adults, with evening classes and flexible scheduling. And he also appreciates the quality of the education he’s getting.

“The teachers are great motivators,” he says. “They make you want to be here, and they go out of their way to help you succeed. What you learn goes right from the classroom to the real world. It’s preparing me for a bigger and better job.”

For the foreseeable future, Luis would be perfectly happy for that job to be with his current employer, Sechan. “I want to stay here for a while,” he says. “There’s a lot of potential here.”

And his Alvernia education is helping him tap it.
