Alvernia University - Sarah Heckman

Hello Everyone!

Let’s get through the basics! My name is Sarah Heckman, a dynamic junior at Alvernia College. I’m currently majoring in communications and business with a minor in English. I’m president of Sigma Tau Delta, proud theatre club participant (in addition to being secretary) and SHRM member. I love Alvernia and all of the amazing opportunities it offers, from trips to foreign countries (FOR CREDIT) to club conventions like the one last spring; to Louisville with Sigma Tau Delta. Although I’m heavily involved my top priority remains to be school work with an 'I work hard to play hard attitude'.

So much has happened already this semester, and midterms are just now sneaking up! A few weeks ago I had an early bird opportunity with the founder of Auntie Anne’s and another with Sigma Tau Delta filled with; authors, poets and literary figures galore.

The morning began early but was well worth it. After buttoning up my new blue shirt I headed of to the Sheraton for breakfast at the Sheraton. Auntie Anne herself, Anne Belier spoke. She was lovely and inspiring; I also attempted to video tape her entire talk with some success. Mayors, commissioners, presidents (Dr. Flynn) and even a Senator were present.

After stocking up on donuts and napkins we all piled in the van and headed to the Dodge Poetry Festival in Waterloo New Jersey. We had the opportunity to hear a couple dozen poets read a sampling of their work. The experience was so incredible. We were able to get a true feel for poets such as: Chris Abani, Coleman Barks, Coral Bracho, Lucille Clifton, Mark Doty, Robert Hass, Ted Kooser, Maxine Kumin, Naomi Shihab Nye, Sharon Olds, C. D. Wright, Franz Wright just to name a few.
